Firstly, I'd like to explain my situation. I am pretty new to playing Medieval but previously played Shogun. I am currently playing as the Italians and have conquered all of Italy, France, The Holy Roman Empire, and Southern England (working on Ireland).

I am yielding about 14000 florins a year (that is, 14000 in excess after expenses) mostly from Venice, Tuscany, Flanders, and a few other provinces close to breaking 1000+ florins. This is not my problem.

My problem is the pope I conquered Italy in the mid 1160's. Popey boy started his rebellions about a decade after I had conquered them. I was surprised at the size of his army he was able to muster. I used the simple strategy of always placing myself on a sizeable hill with 6 archer units, a number of Italian Infantry to absorb cavalry, Men-at-Arms or Mercenaries and Cavalry to chase the rest of the buggers off to rout them.

Every year I am outnumbered but manage to get about 1500 kills to my 300 or so deaths. I have had 6-7 battles so far that I actually commanded against him. The 8th time I was so sick of commanding against these worthless fucks that I just auto'd it. I auto'd and lost 2500 men I'm either gonna replay it so I don't lose my precious veterans which will eventually conquer the Spanish ( I hate the Spanish ) or flood the province with some cheap units to be auto'd.

My main question is....WHEN WILL HE STOP The pope has been attacking almost every 3 years now. I don't have enough time to make the cannon fodder army because I'm too busy rebuilding the veteran units to full strength. It is ridiculous how many bastards the pope can summon so is there any way to stop him?

And on a side note, I just registered but I can't post in the main hall, is there a reason for this?

I can't help you with your Papal problems, other than refering to the Beginners Guide for Totalwar (one of the pinned topics in the entrance hall).

Yes, you cannot post in the entrance hall until you are promoted to senior patron. Read: New? Read this first?, another pinned topic. The reason for this is to discourage spammers and people who just post a few times, never to return. It takes around 2 weeks to get promoted (I was promoted in 9 days), depending on how often you participate in the discussion (participate, not just post) and whether the moderators are availible (they have lives of their own). A senior patron can post and start topics everywhere, except that he cannot start topics in the watchtower. You need to be promoted to senior MEMBER for that (and before that, you need to be promoted to junior MEMBER, I admit it is a bit confusing, just think member is better than patron).

Anyway, welcome to the Org http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wave.gif

Oh, I started just like that. Exactly one month ago.

And I've must have explained this already 3 times to other newbies. Just read New? Read this, and that contains all you need to know about the Org. For questions about the games, read forgbeastegg's Beginners' guide to Total War and The Complete Unit Guide to Total War. Than you know, well, not all, but certainly a lot of what you need to know about total war.

The Pope NEVER stops. He's hardcoded to be a pain in the arse by being the only faction that can't be eliminated.

Your best bet now is to move your troops out of a province that he formerly owned, the poorest one possible, destroying all the building before you leave. Then when the Pope re-emerges in that province he will take it over, but will not be at war you, which is very important for excommunication. If you leave troops in a province and lose to his rebellion then he will retake the province and you will be at war with him.

Its best to NOT conquer the Pope until last but leave him weak and poor in his starting provinces. As the Italians this means you will have to leave troops in the border provinces or he will, very unchristianlike, attack you.
The troops he gets from his re-emergences are usually better and more than he can ever afford if he is kept turtled in Rome and the Papal States.

Best thing to do is invade kill loads of stacks and then leave the pope one or two provinces you now have mastery of Italy and the pope is weak. Watch him carefully he will stab the Itallians and Sicillians in the back.

I've modded my Pope to be a in Provincial blackhole. While not involved militarily he can still excommunicate.

Basically I exiled him to FINLAND:D and made sure he can't get out and no can get in. He's since then only made one comeback. Once u defeat he'll retire with three stacks to FInalnd and get involved militarily.

Pope is simply indestructible, plain and simple, and he keeps coming back. I was once in a same position and have given up on defending the Rome, practiced the burned ground strategy (razed all the buildings in Rome) and left it back to him.

Ever since I save the Pope for last. Currently, my enemies, the English, have conquered the Rome, and have a mighty Pope at their backs every few turns. He must be driving them mad too.

Keep him in the papal states instead, Rome is a better province. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/bigthumb.gif

Ofcourse you'll need to reduce his forces to nothing so he won't bother you and force you to keep huge stacks of troops around him.

No the pope won't stop, but here is a nice solution. first build a really nice strong castle, with cannons and other upgrades. put timer on battles. and just put some knights and strong infantry in castle. the pope will assult ur castel the turn after he appear. and just sit back and watch the bodies. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/cheers.gif
