View Full Version : new to game, can units have more then 60 members?
I got this game at a resale store (no manual), and I am reading about battles with 1500+ men per side
currently I can only get to 960 in an army is there a way to increase a units size?
Also wondering about some sort of building/unit list, is there a decent generic manual I can pick up?

Yes,
A unit can have up to 120 men in it. You can adjust the number of troops from the "options" menu.
Most people play with the 60 man setting because 120 units are big and clunky on the battlefield, and 120s sometimes slow your computer down. (especially online)
Set up a few custom battles and then you can decide which unit size do you prefer. Keep in mind that bigger units are more coslty to produce and to upkeep during the campaign.
I know of no decent generic manual but if you go to the home-page of the Org then on the right you will find some very useful links, strategic guieds, etc.
So units size is a per game set up option.
DOH! never thought to look there.
Thanks.
The biggest thing to remember about 120 man units is that besides costing twice as much (which is the same price per head really) they take 2 seasons to raise in a campaign. Planning becomes more important because you can't get a new unit in a region every turn. The battles look terrific though.
Quantity has a quality all its' own.
You can find the STW manual for download in our files section.
Search a bit and you'll find it.

I only play with 120 http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/biggrin.gif those battles with 3840 guys (1920 guys on each side) look great especially when 3/4 are dead AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHA *choke*
The problem of having 120men/unit setting is that:
It completely defeats the delicate beauty and balance of the combat system.
Units are now clumsy to move around;
Kensais and BNS are rendered useless;
Maps are now all the sudden 1/2 smaller than they supposed to be.
...
You name it.

Sorry, Gothmog, but I gotta disagree. The combat system remains unharmed. Maps are plenty big for 120 man units. In fact, to the degree that larger formations reflect the ponderous nature of armies more so than 60, combat fidelity is enhanced. BN and kensai still function fine. They are marginal units anyway.
And most of all, the battles LOOK more grand and real. So I submit that the 120 unit size IMPROVES the beauty and feel of the combat system.

Gothmog is exactly correct about the maps ---
That is the biggest problem. If units are 2x as big than they cover 2x the space, and the map is effectively 1/2 the size. Less maneuver room. Like fighting in closet.
Thanks for all the input.
I tried some differnt sizes last night, I did notice that 100 and 120 took two turns to make. however, I seemed to be attacked a LOT less in the early years. Shrug... not sure what size I'll settle on but 80 seem a nice so far.
I still can't figure out how to retrain damaged units, or to retrain for higher weapons/armor. Is that a feature from a patch? I read that you could just drag and drop a unit into the train que, but when I have the que open I can't select any units?
I am going to search (as suggested) this site for the manual
Thanks agin for your help

Did you buy the original shogun total war (red box)or the warlord edition (white and black box)
I think retraining is only available in the Warlord version...

retraining is only avaliable on WE/MI. Of course it would help if I knew how the hell to do it, although i hardly ever play Shogun anymore. I guess i've moved on but am anxiously waiting for MTW.
