Hi all,
I'm having a little problem at the moment, playing as the English, I've not been able to get any Longbowmen or Billmen in any of the provinces even after upgrading to the requiered buildings ei: Bowyer's or Spearmen's Guild.
I did see them in Wessex when it was under rebel rule at the begining but not since. I'm playing at the Normal level.

I'm now in 1207 and doing good but these guys could realy come in handy againt the Bysantines.

Jehan.

That's very odd. Are you sure they didn't just become available? The high period should start in 1205. The third level of spearmaker/bowyer should be high enough. Guild is level 3, right?

Longbows appear in high and late, so they should be available at that point, I can't remember what was it for billmen exactly…though I have modded my game beyond any recognition, so that I don't exactly remember when the high era begins… Have you been modding something too? Perhaps you simply messed them up…

That would be for the Feudal/Chivalric Knights. Longbows and Spearmen do not need an armourer (but armour is generally a good thing, unless you want to fight in the desert).

Guilds should be enough :/ Strange stuff isn't it. Especially since billmen are your god. They rock so much. As do longbows.

Try building up your spearmakers and fletchers. Give it another 5-6 turns to see. Also, you are running plain VI/ME right? No mods or nothing? Some of them can affect when or how units appear.

Hi Guys,
Thanks for the help, just after posting I finaly got both units. Don't ask me why exactly but all I know is that I started building Royal palaces and Courts. I think VoigtKampf & Phatose may be right and it all could be period related since the change occured around 1208-09.

Bummer is that just as I started building the units, Civil war broke out. the French & Spaniards reemerged and I lost Ile de France. Any takes on treating the rebels, kill only the ringleaders or kill them all?

Ever try bribing the rebels armies? It's doesn't cost that much, results in less damage to the country and often gives you decent troops as well that you can use to help loyalty ratings.
I usually free all of them in the hope that it makes people happier. I'm only a newb though so I don't know the right answer. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/cool.gif

You're right. Most of the times it works really well. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

You do realise, that you can see the rebel army and choose the one you want the most, right? http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif

Bribe high quality armies, with units you can't build yet… Also, as often as you can, you should bribe commanders with a high acumen, they can sometimes appear with an acumen of 6-7 in a rebellions, you get a hold of some very capable governors that way…

If I have a civil war, I usually try to abandon provinces to the rebels where they've got good troops that I want to save and reinforce the others to make sure that I hang onto them.

Then I just bribe the rebel armies back the following year after moving some emissaries in. I always kill any prisoners taken in civil war battles though as the rebels annoy me.

Civil wars can make for funnily unbalanced battles too. I had a good one the other day with five units of knights on my side defending against five units of rebel crossbows. I put all my knights as far forward as possible to start with and just charged them immediately. It was funny watching the rebels flee for their lives (not that any of them had much of a chance to escape).
