This is my best campaign so far I havent had the game long just got VI for x-mas anyway i took over the sicillians then i saw only 2 provinces I thought how the heck will i do this byzantine province to the north i decided not to attack it because i couldnt fund a war against the byzantines.
So i start pumping ships from sicily and upgrading malta then over 100 years pass and i have a ship in every coastal piece of water and sicily is bringing in about 5000 florins a year the pope has taken the province from the byzantines and the italians have made a big empire.
No factions have been eliminated apart from the argonese i start building an army in malta and sicily then the POPE invades sicily i was gobsmacked i retreated to malta get all the mercs i could and attacked the pope killed the force in sicily and pushed through all of italy apart from the italian provinces in the north.
Then i move a stack into the almo province next to egypt and take it because there was no garrison (when will the ai learn) and then i steamnroller across almo empire then start a war in southern spain with the spanish i almost kill them but they hold portugal.
So i call a ceasefire and attack the french at this point im still brining a big income about 10,000 a year and i have the biggest income but one of the smallest empires i attack the french but i cant kill them so i look to the rebel provinces in russia and i take one of them by sea.
And then the next year the mongols appear in that province with about 20,000 troops so i withdraw abd leave 100 peasants in the fort the mongols dont storm the castle and it falls in 2 years.
I call a ceasefire and i attack the byzantines leaving a small army at home and then the pope reappears in rome and take all of italy but doesnt invade sicily (thank god) and thats as far as i got.
This is by far my hardest campaign yet im just hoping i can wipe out the byzantines then the mopngols when their numbers dwindle.

Yes, the Sicilians are fun, but they are more fun in MedMod. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

I did manage to read through that, http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif and it sounds like you are having fun. A bit of a run-on, though.

Don't mess with the Pope. Don't mess with the Byzantines. Trade a lot. Those are the three major points to playing the Sicilians. Good luck.

I disagree with not messing with the Byzantines. As soon as possible raise an army and, conquer Naples. Since you don't share bordes and, it will be a while before their ships reach Sicily the war will end through lack of intrest.

Build a trade route to the Constantinople and, Antioch. Use crusades to capture the Holy Land and, watch your income skyrocket.

At one point I had 1,300,000 Florin in reserve before I declared war on the Poles. I literally managed to buy Poland and, Central Europe.

I've found that you can scrounge really deep when funding wars, so I go after the big guys about 5yrs after the beginning and it has worked well for me.

This is a cleaned up version of the original post. I thought it might make things easier on the eyes. If Holy_Knight wants to copy and paste this over his original post, so much the better.

This is my best campaign so far. (I havent had the game long just got VI for x-mas) Anyway, I took over the Sicillians. Then i saw only 2 provinces; I thought how the heck will I do this? Byzantine province to the north. I decided not to attack it because I couldn't fund a war against the Byzantines. So i start pumping ships from Sicily and upgrading Malta.

Over 100 years pass and I have a ship in every coastal piece of water and Sicily is bringing in about 5000 florins a year. I start building an army in Malta and Sicily then the POPE invades Sicily. I was gobsmacked. I retreated to Malta to get all the mercs I could and attacked. The pope killed the force in Sicily and pushed through all of Italy apart from the Italian provinces in the north

I moved a stack into the Almohad province next to Egypt and take it because there was no garrison. (when will the ai learn) and then I steamnroller across the Almohad empire. I started a war in southern Spain with the Spanish. I almost kill them but they hold Portugal so I call a ceasefire and attack the French at this point. I'm still bringing a big income of about 10,000 a year and I have the biggest income but one of the smallest empires. I attack the French but I can't kill them so I look to the rebel provinces in Russia and I take one of them by sea.

I call a ceasefire and I attack the byzantines leaving a small army at home and then the Pope reappears in Rome and takes all of Italy but doesn't invade Sicily (thank god) and that's as far as I got. This is by far my hardest campaign yet I'm just hoping I can wipe out the Byzantines then the Mongols when their numbers dwindle.

Some advice re: The Pope (and I, despite repeated warnings, found this out the hard way) do not, and I mean

DO NOT

wipe him out. He's like the energiser bunny. He just keeps on coming back and coming back and coming back and coming back and coming back.....

Take Rome, cos its an excellent province to have, and leave him just the Papal States, a province of little value. And basically leave him there. If he attacks you, drive him back, weaken him, but NEVER EVER kill him, no matter how much you want to http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/bigthumb.gif

In complete agreement with Lord Suribachi...

Some recommend ASAP attack on Pope if you play as catholic, but I prefer to stay away from Rome for as long as possible… He was murdering the English in my last campaign, not to mention how he was murdering me in when I got Rome as HRE. He simply keeps coming back with massive, massive forces, it wears out everyone, especially early in the game. If you can quarantine him in the Papal States, even better, leave him for the end…

I'm in the middle of Sicillian campaign at the moment - 1259 - definately take Naples, get the merchants up and running and start pumping out ships as fast as you can.

I have crusaded successfully to Palestine and from there spread into Asia Minor. I didn't want to mess with the Byz - but the b*stards antagonised me so I destroyed all their shipping, cut their forces in two and pinned down their armies while my allies the Horde tore through them to the north. They are a minor faction these days.

The Pope remains an ally, even though he plots against me. Spain are the biggest power, but that gunpowder is soon to come online and I can upgrade to war galleys (although I can't seem to build a shipwright's guild.... do I need a fortress?) and destroy their shipping.

My trade routes are pumping in up to 15,000 florins profit a turn and I routinely bribe whole provinces and call up mercenary armies.

You need to build level 2 or 3 foundries first in order to construct larger ships, IIRC.
