Well, since you're interested, I can provide a little information about the direction we're going in... The way it's implemented right now is that armies on the campaign map have a certain number of movement points; armies which contain one or more siege artillery units have less, armies which are made up out of only cavalry have more (but not greatly more - about 30% extra). The rationale behind this is that even the fastest army is restricted to the speed of its supply train. Also it's a common misconception that horses move much faster than men over a period of weeks - over 100 yards, yes, over 100 miles, no.

Moving across terrain then costs movement points. For example, fields are cheap, marshes and sparse forest dearer, and hills expensive. These costs are overridden by roads, which are always very cheap to move across, and get cheaper as you get higher quality roads. It's an interesting double-edged sword: high-quality roads allow you to move troops quickly around your empire, and also encourage trade, but they also make the inner cities vulnerable if there is a breakthrough at the front lines.

Happy newyear, all

Good Job CA, its going into the right direction http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/bigthumb.gif

I think that cavlary units should move a bit faster than infantry and advance at least two provinces per turn or at least for light cavalry or make it a technology upgrade for horse breeding buildings.

RTW will not work with provinces anymore. The map will consist of linked battlefields. These battlefield will cover a lot less area on the map than the provinces, so an army can move over several battlefields during one turn.

Now if only we can get the game sometime soon.

I read something, somewhere, can't find the URL atm, about the romans and their supply trains, basically they could move about 10 miles a day and the scout party and most of the first leagion would of made it the new camp, and be setting it up, before the end of the supply train and the rearguard had left the old one. Makes you wonder what we're doing wrong when, in this advanced age, we can't get toilet roll and toothpaste to our fighting men and women. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/rolleyes.gif

I figured this would be so… Well done, I suppose dragging all that heavy siege equipment will not be very wise if you are sending a relief force to an attacked city…

Yeah you are absolutly right - especially when you are trying to assault a city deep in the mountains. It seems to me that naval part of the game is going to be more important because of this.

Instead of dragging your siege train for thirty years you can transport it by sea while your legions march onwards.

It raises an interesting question though. Since the first faction i am going to play is going to be Parthians (i love cavalry heavy armies), slow speed of siege equipment will probably slow the advance of Parthian war machine, or it would have to be used very very efficiently.

I just cant wait till the bloody game is out :weeps uncontrollably:

Just don’t mention the naval part of the game… That is abstract, my dear, no way I can even make a guess of how it will work…

As for slow army advancement, you can always split your army in two parts, and send the faster ones ahead. Sure, it lowers your offensive power and puts both parts at greater risk to get ambushed or cut off, but many commanders had to make the same difficult decision over and over again…
