well obviously the citadel because it gives you the best possible building upgrades and can house the most units.

Citadel, though not for the fact that it gives you upgrades, but for the fact that I can have so many people in there. Or if I have very few people then I can go for years before losing people in there.
That's only because you are using the old STW. In WE/MI, they fixed it so that the AI won't wait and wait and wait for your troops to starve to death; instead, they will attack when they have overwhelming force.

Konnichiwa james san,
I guess you mean the autopillage? Yes very annoying, a castle is strategically placed (a rivercrossing, mountainpass, road). Japan in sengoku jidai was not easy to travel in due to the mountains and the lack of roads. Therefore it's unrealistically to think that any important 'building' could be pillaged by invading enemies when the defender is still in his castle (the 'invade from' system that MTW will have can make much more sense here). But even then, I should be able to decide whether there will be pillaged or not. Not only a toggle in gameoptions (autopillage on/off), but also whether I want my army to pillage a given province (I'ld rather say AREA) or not. It would add much more depth to this game. Sid Meiers AC and Civ allow raids on city areas (pillage constructions), a great way to exhaust strong opponents.
Anyone should be able to play this game how he/she thinks it should or he/she wants to play it: arcade/realistic or any combination of it.

theres only one big building in the middle of the citadel and four small huts in all four corners, but if you are attacked and have a huge garrison of about.....well i dont know, were do all the soldiers live?

Well james you have to take into account that the castles in the game are not realistic, true castles whre more complex and had several keeps.

That is why the castles in MTW have had so much improvment (supposedly). Castles in STW were the only things that really let the game down completely. They were too basic.
In the MI map editor, I tried vainly to make an interesting castle with more than one place, but many of the inner courtyards were impossible to get into.

James,
If I may give you a little bit of advice: "Try putting more than one question in one post and try to ask in a way that even a wet Thunder Bomber would understand what you want to know exactly. That would make it easier for you to get your answers and for the ones that want to give you the answers you need."

Mods can do anything. Often they will change graphics, music, unit stats, whatever the mod maker is capable of.
