Where is the point when the Total War batle enging becomes too inflexible to use? I've always thought it was the post - nepoleanic era for the Europeans and around about 1850 in the USA (I'm not sure for other countries). But theres only a certain amount of recorded history that the CA ppl can use (isn't there?). For example, it'll be just mesyy trying to fight WW2 (a pretty mobile war) in the TW battle engine. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

ya, they're gonna have to stick to swords and shields. Maybe the farthest they could push it would be napoleon era though, since they did stay in neat units.

I agree. TW could maybe work until the widespread use of rifled weapons. After that mounted cav is useless in battle and big melees of any sort become less likely. So I guess that puts us around 1850.

definatly late 1800's. I think you oculd pull a WWII mod off, but only if you make the units smaller. LIke beserker size. This way they dont really look like they are forming ranks. If you wanted to, I wonder if you could mod it so when the shoot they are lieing down....that owuld be kewl....runn dive shoot. run dive shoot. You could pull off special ops battles in modern times with that. hmmmm

Agreed. Post-WO 1, wars revolved more around skirmishing and manoevres then large battles. They were more at a strategic level. The TW-engine is just not suited for this kind of confrontation.

If TW went to WW1 and beyond, it would not be the same game. It could be done, but I would say it would lose most of its appeal. Trench wars, tanks and planes? It just wouldn't work as half as good, run up to Napoleon and somewhere to the late 19th century and call it a day.

Yes, indeed. I agree with you for the exact same reasons. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/bigthumb.gif

How ironic that the next game chooses to go back in time from MTW. :-p

What if CA made a different engine? http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/tongue.gif

I think that anything post-American Civil War would be pretty difficult to do, as it would require the implementation of a much better strategic system. However, this is only using the Medieval engine. Who knows how far the Rome engine will go.

I just skimmed through the RTW FAQ. IMO, the new RTW engine can be developed to work with modern warfare style. RTW now use the dynamic, point-to-point campaign map, which I think, is the important first step.

I reckon with the current (and probably even rome engines) you could only ever get up to Boer War, although even this would be pushing it; the British used nice pretty formations (with smart red uniforms wot wot), but the boers used guerilla tactics. It could be achieved, but I reckon this is as far as it could go.

The problem is that the moment you get into the era of Gunpowder you end up with ever improving artillery, and the ability to flatten your enemy from the other side of the map

Napoleonic era is probably as high as you could get it I think.

Still there's plenty more periods they could do, European Dark Ages, Ancient China, India and Asia, wars in Africa, and the Napoleonic era itself.

There's a lot of future in the Total War games as yet.
