View Full Version : Effect of experience

Does experience influence the morale of enemy troops? I know experience gives a +1 attack / +1 defence / +2 morale bonus to your troops, but do experienced troops also scare new recruits?

During my last battles in STW I suddenly noticed that armies which would have stand up to me (and get slaughtered) at the beginning of the campaign, now turn their tale and run very fast after the first hand-to-hand combat starts. Not just the engaged units, not just ashigaru, the whole army start legging towards the horizon. Is this because my army core (warrior monks) has gained a lot of experience?
My generals have improved only little (from four to five stars), the only thing that is really different (except for the experience) are the supporting units and the upgrades.

So what causes this sudden cowardice amongst rebels and Mori samurai alike?

A very succint answer, Prince Aymar.
But to the point.

sort of related (in a way)

does the dread rating of a general in M:TW have any effect on the battlefield? I would imagine if the opposing army knew that in his last battle the enemy general slaughtered a thousand prisoners, they might get a little shaky? Also, is there a difference to morale if its just a regular general who gets killed or the king? is the morale hit related to the rank of the general in any way, because I imagine the army would be more concerned if one of their great leaders fell than if it was just some upstart peasant.

It does not, as far as I know.
Anyway, if the opposing general was known for slaughtering prisonners, I would be shaky, but very determined not to be taken prisonner. On the other hand, once I started running from the field, I would not stop. CA probably assumed these factors cancelled each other out. Or they were just lazy http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif .

I thought dread did have an affect on the battlefield, but that was only a gut reaction on my part. My thinking was that it made the opposing army more likely to rout or retreat off the battlefield. I could be wrong though.

I totally agree with you that the game has missed a VERY important battlefeature - the dread of a commander This is a huuuge mistake

It would be greatly appreciated, by me and, if I may say so, by the community if we could have the official answers to some old questions that have been asked several times in the past.
1) Does dread have any effect on the battlefield? If so, what is the effect?

1) Dread has no direct effect on the battlefield. I don't know if it has any effects on VnVs which affect the battle.

edit: it seems a bit of a slippery slope to me. If i were a soldier facing a general known for slaughtering prisoners (and hence high dread)i'd be a bit apprehensive about facing him. on the other hand, i'd fight to the bitter end (i.e. give me higher morale) rather than be gutted like a pig as his prisoner.
