View Full Version : Rain sound in Shogun

I haven't thought of this in a long time, since I've been immersed in Medieval for the last couple of years... but I have a problem with my old Shogun game I thought I'd bring up in case anyone knew of a solution:
Whenever I fight a battle in Shogun, the music and sounds of battle are drowned out in a loud sound of rain, but ONLY when the weather is clear. Whenever it's actually raining, there is no rain sound and the music plays as normal. This is extremely annoying. I even went so far as to uninstall the game and re-install it, in case the original had been somehow corrupted. But the problem remains.
Is there a patch available to fix this, and where might I find it? Or, is there a certain file on my hard drive I can modify to alleviate the problem, and how is this accomplished? Again, many thanks to any useful information. Cheers. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

Whoa You hear rain when it is clear? This sounds (hehehe) more like a sound card issue than a game issue. What can you tell us about your system? Don't forget to include info about your sound setup (card, speakers, drivers up-to-date).

Yeah, update the sound card drivers, also tell me what card you have?
Maybe an Apothecary thread greg?

I don't know very much about sound cards and such (I bought my computer second-hand), but I tried looking for this information and this is what I came up with:
OS Name Microsoft Windows

OS Manufacturer Microsoft Corporation
System Name HPPAV
System Manufacturer 00101910 8765C
System Model 15136200000346
System Type X86-based PC
Processor AMD Athlon Processor AuthenticAMD ~906 Mhz
BIOS Version EPP revision 9.00
Windows Directory C:\WINDOWS
System Directory C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM
Boot Device \\Device\Harddisk0
Locale United States
User Name XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
Time Zone Eastern Standard Time
Total Physical Memory 255.45 MB
Available Physical Memory 14.67 MB
Total Virtual Memory 2.00 GB
Available Virtual Memory 1.59 GB
Page File Space 1.75 GB
Page File C:\WINDOWS\WIN386.SWP
I'm trying to search on my own for a driver update to see if that helps. Any links or info that might save some time? http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smokin.gif

By the way... the sound card is the Riptide Audio Device.
Name Riptide Audio Device
Manufacturer Conexant
Status OK
PNP Device ID RPBOOT\AUDIO\01PCI&VEN_127A&DEV_4310&SUBSYS_43101235&REV_00&BUS_00&DEV_0E&am
p;FUNC_00
I/O Port 0x0304-0x0307
Driver c:\windows\system\vmm32.vxd (, 1,019.88 KB (1,044,352 bytes), Not Available)
Driver c:\windows\system\mmdevldr.vxd (4.90.3000, 17.62 KB (18,043 bytes), Not Available)
Just an observation, but Conexant usually make modems and the like. This is more likely to be a codec for voice-over-ip rather than the soundcard.

Could be. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif
I downloaded a driver for Riptide. Now when I battle, there is still a rain sound in clear weather and no rain sound when it's raining. However, the rain sound isn't overpowering anymore; I can hear music and speech over it now.
Weird.
I can't help you on your problem but I have to mention the sound effects are great in a battle with lightning

Maybe it's an updated Shogun version. Because, you know, besides a different kind of snow, which requires a special kind of skis, Japan has a different kind of weather. You hear rain when there isn't any, you don't hear it when there is. Japan is on the other end of the world, so you should expect difference in all kinds of things from what we are used to in the west.

Wolfric, I copied the description of your problem into the Apothecary. You can find it here (http://www.totalwar.org/cgi-bin/forum/ikonboard.cgi?act=ST&f=2&t=14129&st=&&#entry211196).

first thing, go to Start, then Run. type in dxdiag and hit return. wait for it to load completely, then hit the little button in one of the corners that says 'save all information'. then hit each of the tabs at the top and run all the tests you find there.
i dont recall offhand what version of windows 'build 3000' is, but isnt it windows 2000? anyone remember?
at any rate, dxdiag will give you a LOT of information about your system and how well, or not, it's working. in later versions of windows, 'save all information' will put a desktop icon on your desktop. double click it to open the file and you can study that info it presents.
if you find no errors in those tests and all seems to be working ok, while you're in dxdiag, find where it says 'hardware sound acceleration' and move the slider all the way to the left or 'off' if it gives you that option. then, close dxdiag and try the game again.
post your results here.
edit: ok, here's another link you may want to look at:
