I remember long, long, long ago hearing somewhere it would be out by 2003 and clearly it is not. I'm not dissapointed that just means it will be better, but does anybody have even a rough idea of when the game will be released?

Fall - well, Autumn for those of us who use proper English http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/gc-happy2.gif - 2004 is the date. And if you're faced (as I am this morning) with a heap of things that absolutely, positively, no-messing have to be done yesterday, then it really isn't that far away.

We don't get to work on the game until that point, of course. We have to stop well before then to allow time for translations, manufacturing and distribution and all kinds of other very necessary stuff.

Announcements are one of the many mysteries of marketing. "Why? Why?" we cry, at an uncaring sky, seeking explanations from the Gods as to what is going on. And frankly, sometimes even the Gods are bit baffled. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/gc-smile.gif

However, what's taking 'another half a year' is 'the game'. There's a lot of code in Rome: Total War, and that takes time for the programmers to create. Add in artwork, data, text, music, sound fx and you have one humdinger of a project... and it's not like any of us are slacking.

However, the good thing is that we have got the time to make sure that the game is really, really good, rather than just good: fun, interesting to play, deep, historical and so forth. We're extremely lucky to have this time, and although it might seem a little bit too much like a politician to say this: trust us. We're really not messing about for the sake of it. We're trying to make something more than a bit special.

In the meantime, we do our best to keep you informed as to what's going on and give you tasty wee snippets of various kinds.

Anyway, that's what is going on: lots of work. More development work than you can shake a stick at. Of which, I'd better carry on doing my share. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/gc-smile.gif

Fall 2004 does seem like a long time, but somehow I am happy to wait. From what I know of STW and MTW, plus the demonstrations in Time Commanders, I know this is going to be an amazing game well worth being patient for.

One way to look at it is this - once the game is out, not much work can really be done on it (for commercial reasons, the designers need to switch to new products). Patches can give a few nice little things, but the substantial stuff has to be done before hand. The more time spent working on it now, the better it will be.

Do you have any info on the MP aspect of the game? Not necessarily any juicy details about campaign http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif Just the standard MP game, how much (more) you will focus on it compared to MTW?

I say let them take all the time they need, it will just end up being that much better when they finish as opposed to if we try to rush them. I just hope there arnt a lot of bugs in it.

Vanya sez... Vanya remember seeing IGN preview screenshots from link on main org page. On that preview, it said the release or availability date of the game was October 31, 2004.

Vanya not know the accuracy of this info, just that He saw it with His own surrogate head's decaying eyeballs (one of which was made of splintered glass and glued together with pig fat).
