I find troop retraining a bit of a hassle in MTW.
I was thinking about it last night and came up with a new idea on how it could be done.
Units that are garrisoned in a castle / town / city, whatever they will be, should automatically be in the training queue if they are under strength and that city has the upgrades necessary to retrain. The definition of under strength could be an option for the player to choose (i.e. less than 80% full strength).
I'd like units to be retrained in a hierachical order, generals first, then high maintenance units down to the cheaper units. Obviously when going into a city there should be a queue for these troops that you can maniupulate, moving the order about. Some options that could be associated with this. Build new units before retraining or vica versa. Retrain order sorted by type of unit as expressed above, by maintenance cost, by number of men needed to complete the unit. There are probably many more options that could be suggested.
It would save the many times I've gone into a city only to find I've had a bunch of units sitting there that I meant to retrain, but have had my attention drawn elsewhere and have forgotten to place them in the queue.
The troops that are in retraining queues should be available if the province comes under attack. I'm sure in real life, if a city came under attacke any unit that was understrentgh would still man the defence.
Also if you have say 5 units that need 20 troops each to achieve full strength. All five units should be completed in one turn up to the cities maximum build for that turn.
I little bit of a tangent here. I also think that very large cities should be able to build more than one unit in a turn.
Comments?
