Dread has this much effect on the battlefield...........ZERO

The only effect taht it has is on the populace of your kingdom and it keeps them pacified.

For example, each skull of dread that the governor of a province has increases that province's loyalty by 5%.

To rise dread, slaughter every prisonar u get. every last one, even foerign kings and prince. and excuted all rebels captured. this will give u govener and king vices that will rise dread. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/gc-juggle.gif http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/gc-2thumbsup.gif

But dread does have an effect on the battle field (at least indirectly) due to the vices you may gain from being such a scary bastard.
At least one of the vices gives your troops a morale penalty.

The Scant Mercy Vice (Virtue?) gives your guy +1 Dread (he has killed prisoners without hesitation when it looked like the battle might go against him)

The No Mercy Vice (He shows no mercy and has killed many prisoners, but is posibly to eager to do so, which deprives his men of their share of the ransom) gives +2 Dread and -1 Morale

Secret Blood Lover (He kills prisoners even when it is not necessary . . . ) +3 Dread

Blood Lover (It has become known that he kills prisoners for his own pleasure, denying his men their share of the ransom) gives +3 Dread, -3 Morale, -2 Piety.

Butcher (He is famous for the massacre of thousands of prisoners in a single battle. Few can match the horror of this deed) +2 Dread

The Butcher tag comes from killing a very large number of men, but the others seem to be cumulative. After a while, killing prisoners starts to work against you in the morale department, and that's fairly significant.

On the other hand, Occasional Mercy gives +1 Happiness.

I vary my response, and if a guy already is known for lacking mercy I usually do not kill the prisoners unless there is a good reason to do so.

IIRC, a high dread rating can also discourage enemy factions to attack the province where the dreaded general resides.

so another words... a really high dread rating is bad...well it keeps the scots from rebelling so i really doing care.

Dread is good, as long as you try and avoid the vices that incur penalties on you as well as giving you dread http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/gc-yes.gif

The best way to do that is to kill as many prisoners as possible in one battle... after that you tend to get the extra morale drops.

If you wait until the end of the battle, then kill the prisoners before you press the button to see your final kill tallies, your butchered prisoners count towards your kills, its much nicer to see this way rather than going to the kill tallies screen and then killing them :)

I find that if i kill all the prisoners at the end of a single battle i tend to get scant mercy, whereas it takes several battles of ransoming troops back in order to get occasional mercy.
