Two bits of info from the Wargames Directory Forum:

This from Russell: "I rang the BBC on the number suggested by one of the Lion team on another thread. They denied that there were any more time commanders programmes due to air and suggested that the BBC might not have even bought all the programmes.

I registered a complaint."

and this from 'Dark Horizons': "From WWW.bbc.co.uk/info/purpose

This is the second paragraph in a piece titled BBC Purpose.

It provides a wide range of distinctive programmes and services for everyone, free of commercial interests and political bias. They include television, radio, national, local, childrens?, educational, language and other services for key interest groups...

I complained to BBC at christmas about reschedule and never recieved a responce."

The BBC are happy to take the exhorbitant license fee (which we go to jail if we don't pay) but don't fulfil their side of the public service "something for everyone" remit. Two-faced, if you ask me.

See the Smilies (http://www.totalwar.org/cgi-bin/forum/ikonboard.cgi?act=ST;f=13;t=14222;st=0;&#entry215263) thread in the watchtower. Anyway, you can still find all the smilies in the smilies help card beneath the "Enter your post" space.

By the way, the BBC's royal charter comes up for renewal in 2006 (it was last renewed in 1996). The Government wants the views of the public, here: http://www.bbccharterreview.org.uk/

I say that those of us who feel cheated by the BBC's lies about the remaining Time Commanders programmes, and all those who feel the BBC does not fulfil its purpose promise, contribute to the review.

I know many people who have no interest in History, Wargames and PCs who watched that show...

Hell my parents even watched it

Its a real shame that they axed it, now we'll probably have "Fightbox" or some other cack put in its place.

Oh well at least I have a large enough number of episodes on Tape. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

Check out the .com reply at http://tinyurl.com/2wnzd

"OK so here is the latest - the BBC plan to show the last two TCs at the end of February. I'll confirm exact dates for you when I have them. More importantly the powers that be will be meeting in mid-February to discuss a recommission - its not too late to contact the BBC and lobby for a second series"

Maybe it's for the better .. Creative Assembly will be forced to find another way of keeping us "in the air". A demo or something http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smokin.gif

What do you expect? Its the BBC. They are probably spending all their money on a big soap opera or TV series starring blind Eskimo lesbians. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/gc-builder.gif

I was discussing with one of their producers sometime ago about their project on the History of famous Royal Navy ships. He told me that the BBC shelved the project because of lack of funds and interest.

What does the BBC spend its money on anyhow?

Ouch...

I am sure their executives spend the money on the same things American politicians spend taxpayer money on.

"Business" trips to the Bahamas and "mentally stable" plus much younger interns.

I wondered where Marathon went... It was supposedly to have been on the 6th of January or the 13th. Hopefully it will air as they say. I want it

Last two Time Commanders...

No sign of them on the BBC's searchable listings at www.radiotimes.co.uk

Looks like the BBC were right - they either didn't buy the last 2 or Lion TV didn't offer them. As Lion TV have gone awfully quiet, I have to assume the latter.

I breifly read through what you all said and don't see why BBc not doing the show is so bad I mean maybe they will go with a channel that we all get I could see discovery channel as a good one

GAH

Vanya sez... TC probably "canceled" because somebody thought it romanticised and encouraged "violent behavior" among the viewer population. There were reports of teenagers and kids lining up in phalanx formation and whacking each other with broomsticks in the street. But people seemed to be OK with it if it had been just that. It was when some dweebs wearing "plate armor" made of cereal boxes claiming to be "kataphractoi" charged downhill on their tricycles and poked a policeman in the arse with a broomstick that all heck broke loose

When the policeman got up and started clubbing the kids with his nightstick, beating them to a pulp, while grasping at his second arsehole, the silly kids actually "complained" that the policeman unit was not well balanced, and that they would need "armor piercing" weapons and valor upgrades for the "next" charge against the "warrior-monk-like" cops.

So, BBC decided to put out the flames and cancel the show. Kinda like Beavis and Butthead after the silly kids in the US started lighting their houses on fire while running around saying classic quotes like "Fire Fire" and "[they are]the Great Cornholio...".

In response to what the Beeb spend the money on did you not watch Hustle last nght it was basically Spooks (which is great in itself) reinvented Unfortunately those gems of programs only appear every so often on BBC channels http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/frown.gif .
IMO Fightbox is absalout rubbish (or stronger word), i was unfortunate enough to catch a repeat and you could see that nobody (the audience) wanted really to be there... http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/rolleyes.gif .

Maybe we should try to convince Discovery to take up the mantle?

The_Emperor
02-26-2004, 11:54
Well the BBC lost Robot Wars to Channel 5, and that has always been very popular.

Maybe Lion should do a similar thing and approach a different channel to do Time Commanders with. The BBC have a habit of cancelling stuff.

Kraxis

Good, then it is settled Lets spam Discovery with requests like that. What can we lose?

American Time Commanders

In the latest US PC gamer, the team has about three pages on RTW. one of the aticles is on Time commanders, here's what they say:

Quote[/b] ]As We reported earlier, a historical re-enactment show on the BBC called Time Commanders is using the Rome:Total War engine. We asked Creative Assembly's Mike simpson about an American version of the show (a pilot titled Total War has been filmed and is reportedly being shown to varius network "bigshots"), but he had no new details to share. Rest Assured, though, as soon as there's something to report you'll hear it here first.

it may not be much info, but it's better than nothing. Could it be though? Oh i hope so... http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/gc-2thumbsup.gif

Those network big shots most likely will be asking? Could we stick them on a desert island? Could they lose the British accents? How does this relate to the US?

I just hope a good channel like the History Channel or TLC or even discovery channel wise up and pick it up. The History Channel seems like the most likely.

I take no pleasure in saying "I told you so", but here we are at the end of February, and ... no Time Commanders. [>:]

So who was stringing everyone along about the end of February rubbish - surely not a corporation with as great a regard for truth as the BBC? (LOL)

The comparison with Robot Wars and Fightbox is quite interesting. Fightbox definitely sux, and robot wars definitely rocks... I think TC suffered by being too 'educational' with the whole historical simulation angle.

Now, if they tooke the RW/FB approach in which the Point is just to fight and see whose best, a glorified public arena contest, then it might work even better. Proper combatants who know what they are doing and prepare for it, not a bunch of random joes and janes... people with their own heraldry... a national championship... international matches... televised clan matches... it might well enjoy the same kind of audience commitment that Robot Wars gets.

But I think that TC as conceptualised was doomed.
