I woke up in the middle of the night last night trying to figure out the best army composition for my upcoming war with the Byzantines.
Is this normal or should I seek some professional help???
I am new to the game, but have now totally immersed myself. I can't watch The Return of the King battle scene now because I can't help pointing out the poor tactics used in the scene.
... Don't charge straight at the elephants Your light cavalry for crying out loud Flank them Flank them
I am sure there are some very good treatments for this kind of problem. But I'm not sure if I want to be cured just yet.

Welcome Duke of RumpyPumpy http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wave.gif,
If you want a professional opinion, you should ask A.Saturnus (moderator of the tavern), because he is the local psychologist. If he is absent, I might offer some layman's advice. The symptom you mention is be no means uncommon. I myself have suffered from it on several times. It will partially pass over when you get used to the game. Off course, if your problem is the sleepless nights, then I suggest to stop playing the game at least two hours before sleeping. Of course, stop playing the game is easier said than done, especially when waves of Mongols are coming over the horizon.
If the problems continu after several months and even if you stop playing in time, there is nothing to it but install the game. However, I cannot think of anyone who would rather get rid of the game then of the problems.
I hope this will allow you to get rid of afore mentioned problems,
Yours sincerely,
Dr. Ludens http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/gc-toff.gif

Duke of RumpyPumpy you are not alone, lol.
Even when I've got tons of work to do I still can't fight my inner desire to just play a few more turns. And when I am finished I realize it's around 4-5 AM already and then it's a disaster.
I need to get married just to have someone pulling me out of the game in more appropriate hours.
It has been only a few months since I discovered MTW, so hopefully the fever will calm down after a while.

Nope the only hope is that you can play it out of your system... resistance is useless it will have to be left to run it's course.

Welcome Duke O.R.P. Love the Name by the way http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif , it would seem that you have got the Bug, Most here have it, when you start yelling at Movies and offer to improve on tactics being used in the latest History Channel special on Medieval Warfare, when you go to sleep with your last Battle on your mind and keep asking yourself what you can do to improve, then you learn how to Mod the game and you find a sub obsession within an Obsession it never ends
But How Sweet it is... http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/gc-help.gif ...LOS

It just gets worse.
I was out today and saw STW: Warlord Edition for $15Cdn.
How could I pass that up???? I mean I know there is tons of game play left still with MTW... but still 15 bucks. How can I go wrong?
Alas the fates conspire against me. If Rome TW comes out next week I'll be ruined. I will need to pull the phone out of the wall, buy a huge chest freezer, fill it full of frozen dinners, buy my dog diapers, and invent a new kind of foam padding to keep my butt from going numb.
But I'm ok till that happens. Just one more turn and I'll be all right.

Welcome to the Org, Duke of RumpyPumpy
I was partially cured; I played Shogun for days and days - good, old times when I actually had the time for it - and then I played Medieval for days and days again, even though I didn't have so much time for it at all. Now, I don't have time at all, never, but I still find myself roaming these halls, sharing my love for TW with other respected members here and discussing endlessly about the good and bad sides of javelin men. I am diagnosed with TW syndrome, and I have become so comfortably numb.
So, what happened? I stopped lurking these halls - which I did for a loooong time - and joined the Org. Ever since, I have lost all hope for getting rid myself from TW addiction, and I like it so
PS You may well get cured from Shogun and Medieval, but not the Total War itself; Rome is around the corner, and then… Sky is the limit.
It's 3:05 a.m and I just got out of MP. Then I came in here.
I think I can relate to your disease.
1) Do you wake up in the middle of the night and think about armies, battles, or a new map?
2) Do you get up and go work on it?
3) Do you miss work because you were up too late? Or leave early to go home and play? Or do you just play and post here while you are at work? Have you quit your job or school to play more?
4) Do you look out at the countryside as you drive along and think about how you would attack (or hold) a hill that you can see?
5) Do you categorize people according to thier virtues and vices (Deep Thinker, Hedonist, Gluttony, etc)?
6) Do you own STW? STW MI (or Warlord Edition)? MTW? MTW VI? More than one copy of any of these? Do you have over 700 maps to play on?
7) Have you upgraded your computer, internet connction, or the chair you sit in while on the computer? Do you want even more?
8) Does your wife (girlfriend, mother, whatever) talk to the back of your head? Do you turn around from computer to find that wife/girlfriend/mother has left to go somewhere and told you but you didn't hear her? Did she leave to go back to her parents for good this time?
9) Do you hope that you can find a cool avatar for when you get 500 posts? (or that someday you will make Senior Member?) Have you purchased software to create a custom avatar?
10) Are you willing to argue with complete strangers about whether V4 Militia Sargents are a better value than V3 FMAA or V2 CMAA? How about the pros and cons of conquering Ireland? Using Artillery in MP?
If you answered yes to one you probably answered yes to 9 or 10. Diagnosis: Terminal MTWolism
Treatment option 1: Play until exhausted. Sleep. Move to Uzbekistan.
Treatment option 2: live with it. Hope for RTW to be bug free.

This is the signs of a great game. A.V - we salut you for a job well done
I have had theese shakes on a couple of occasions before. With EUII, Pharaoh and CIVII but have played at least 20 other games, all strategic ones. This addictiveness is what we gamers ponder upon when we stand in the game-shop wondering if this new title will give you the shakes and if you are willing to do the sacrificies to play it through.
Sad, but oh how sweet, there is no remedy for the shakes. Welcome to the world of post-traumatic-stress my fellow brother-in-arms

Never a cure, and i'm glad there isn't http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif . i just stopped playing mtw, which i had played for around 9 hours. Thats right 9 hours, Those damn mongols don't know when to quit. Must have fought a fifty year war against them, playing in Late and on MedMod http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/gc-speechless.gif . Oh yeah but good to see ya, i think i'll just... http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/gc-zzz.gif
There is not real cure. MTW is the best game, this side of RTW, and the best RTS to date. It is a game for Mature people, not like the mind numbing FPS, etc.
You are a strategic leader, tactical general, and tactful diplomat. If you would like to have a bit of break, read Sun Tzui's Art of War again.

Its true. One day it might be on a poster in the docter's office... untill that day comes we can still claim to have our sanity, while we play TW of course http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/gc-computer.gif
A topic that finally relates to my problem. I've had this game for a while now, and my grades have never suffered worse. Usually, I'm a slacker when it comes to homework anyways, but now... I get home and I honestly mean to do homework, but none gets done. And yes, I say Only a few more turns, or, Once I'm done with this battle, then I realize that its been an hour or so since I said those things, and my work is very far from complete. I some how managed to stop playing for a couple months or so, then relapsed. I've no solution to the problem, and while I'm afflicted by it, I don't really care for one.

Recent studies show that 100% of the people on the Org have this disease while the totalwar players not on the Org are in denial of the truth.
well i'm 100% infected and 100% happy about the fact http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/bigthumb.gif Little doubt i'll still be having one more turn at 3am today http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/gc-2thumbsup.gif

When I was single I was hopelessly addicted. When I got married the only thing that keeps me from thinking, just one more turn, is my wife standing in the doorway to our bedroom wearing something from Victoria's Secret. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/eek.gif
And that is the only thing that keeps me from being obsessive about this game.

A good cure for a while is a good'ole game-wrecking system fault. For instance, last week when I tried to load up MTW, the monitor proceeds to just plain shutdown completely. The bloody thing just doesn't want to know, though my disks are still running. Have to reboot just to access everything.
Damn computers. Done the video drivers thing. Done the DirectX thing. Done the defrag thing. Done the reinstall game thing. Done the check have not added or removed programmes to have caused the problem in the first place thing. Done the system restore thing. Done the cursing at computer thing. Done drinking heavily for inspiration thing. Contemplating hammer blow to computer thing. Doing the giving up and waiting for RTW thing.
