only discovered this recently, u can right click on the unit and withdraw them from battle.. - kind of obvious i know but i had been running them to the edge of the battlefield and routing them.. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/gc-confused.gif

hope i wasn't alone in my foolishness and this helps somebody somewhere

don't know if this has been clearly stated elsewhere, please forgive if it has :) i've lurked & read most beginners guides and the like http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/gc-book2.gif & am pretty sure i haven't seen anything about it

Hey and welcome to the ORG Lo Rez http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wave.gif

An even better way of telling your troops to withdraw is to use a shortcut CTRL+W - handy if you are stuck in a bad situation.

Cheers,
Rev

if you order troops to withdraw from the battle is it possible that the leader could end up with a cowardice vice?

No. He must run himself to be a coward.

When told to withdraw, a unit will head directly toward a certain map edge from right where they are. This could be dangerous. i.e. If you order a catapult crew to withdraw during a siege you don't want them to wander too close to the castle. Sometimes you need to position a unit safely before ordering the march off.

thx Rev

just as well it doesn't close window http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/gc-grin3.gif

Thon: haven't had opportunity to try that yet but im hoping it'll work out so no coward vice

only other time ive ever had a general lose abattle and not get a vice was when the whole army was pretty much slaughtered and he fought until he was the sole survivor.. not much i hate more than a great general getting good runner http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/gc-angry.gif

Regarding routing:

I find it especially annoying to rout archers only to find them haning around the map and I usually have to hit the rout-button 2-3 times more until they finally leave the battlefield -WHY?
I find it even more annoying that you can´t fight a last-stand or sacrifice-battle where you know that you gonna loose but want to inflict heavy losses to your opponent or stall him until you can get reinforcements to the front. If I don´t rout the general in the end I stand a good chance of loosing him or have to buy him back but if i do he gets the coward-vice -WHY?

Yep withdrawing troops is very handy in large battles, especialy archer type units and very heavely depleted or exausted units..
