View Full Version : For Americans: News on CBS, ABC, NBC, FOX
Just curious, I heard somewhere that Americans do not see much Foreign News on the main Public Broadcast Channels.
Of News Items, do you get 1%, 2%, 5%, 10%, 15% 20%, 25%, more.
We get about 25% plus on our Public News Channels in NZ.
In the states, you get a half hour segment of public news (the city you live in and the supounding area) and then an other half hour segment about world news. Though a lot of news about the other parts of america are shown at this time too.
In National or local News, do you see items about families who have lost relatives lives in Iraq.
Not really... we see the soldiors that die and their families. That's interesting.

For West Islander, that is not bad.
Did you know if a person moves to Australia from New Zealand, he raises the average IQ of both countries ... Sir Robert Muldoon.
I'm not even from new zealand and I think that's funny. Can't wait for the american jokes to start rolling in. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/gc-jester.gif
The local news will have, maybe, about 15% International News, and the Network News, at 6:30 or 11:30, generally, has about 50%-75% International News. I tend to watch CNN or read BBCnews.com, myself.
I get the local news, which here is very local (lost pets, mayors race, fires) on 5 channels (ABC, NBC, CBS, Fox, local station .
I get the national news 3 times a day on four channels (ABC, NBC, CBS, PBS). They cover the big story of the day.
I get 24 hr national news on 5 channels (CNBC, MSNBC, FoxNews, CNN, HNN). Each of these networks has an international show or segment.
Plus I get international news on BBC (yes there is a BBC America). They cover a lot of international news. I also get two feeds on Mexico TV (Univision and Galavision).
Some of the best international news is on the financial news nets (Bloomberg).
We see news about those who are killed in Iraq and Afghanistan. I also look at internet and read newspapers. I think the info is available for USA to see. Many Americans do not pay much attention, busy living thier lives I guess.

Speaking of which, BBC should start a 24 hour news network, and broadcast it over here. I swear, I would get all of my news from such a station.

There is ... It is called BBCWorld see bbcworld.com
In the USA
BBC World News bulletins are rebroadcast daily on Public Broadcast Stations across the country. Please refer to your local PBS for further information on availability and transmission times.
BBC World News bulletins are also rebroadcast daily on BBC America, available on cable and satellite.

I get my news from Fox News Channel. Other US networks tend to put too much spin on the stories and seem to have an agenda of their own. I wish it was mandatory for all polititions to enter the No spin zone, if ur living in america you know wat im talking 'bout. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif
We know about spin here too. There was even a comedy program called Spin Doctors.
I know about the BBCnews, but it is only broadcast about two or three times a day. I was wishing for something along the lines of CNN, or MSNBC, where I could check in any time I wanted. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/tongue.gif

Spin - the problem with spin is it itself is becoming spin. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/gc-dizzy2.gif
I had thought Fox News was worse than the others...
I watch BBC when I can on PBS, but I don't have that much time for TV anyway, and TV news is too canned and condensed. I prefer the New York Times. You can find a pretty good coverage of international events there.

Yes , Fox News is very impartial and fair. No spins , No hidden agendas. Just the good old republican view we all know and love. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/rolleyes.gif

Of course you would think fox is the worst as you seem to prefer the most liberal news PBS and the new york times all with a liberal agenda hehe come on dont tell me you are a republican no offense.Fox is the only balanced network there is.They show both sides of a story.Again this is a matter of opions and philosophy depends on where you are coming from. You are right about the news on the major networks they are all the same like cookie cutter news. But in the US we get all sorts of international news what network you watch it on though will make a difference on the way it is told. Please dont take any offense from this as it is all light hearted.Everyone is entitled to their opinions http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wave.gif

Hey Myrano I just came back to apologise to you I just read your post om FDR.I got you all wrong m8 sorry. You definetly seem to be a self thinking person who loks at things from both sides,Now iI cant figure out if you are a republican or a democrart.I thought I was the only one who thought of FDR like that.As I said Im neither a repbulican or a democrat but a liberatarian.Government has gotten way to big.Sorry everyone if I have gotten of subject,But I was wrong to label you without even knowing you sorry again http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/gc-wall.gif
Well here in Britain (to give a perspective) I normally watch BBC News24 if I want some news on TV, I avoid the others (ie Satellite and ITN because one is owned by Murdoch and the other is still private) and they are pretty much all international news except if there is some child abuse story on. Or some politican is being taken apart for incompetence lol... http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/gc-curtain.gif
Online I look at news.bbc.co.uk and the English Aljazaeera website, combine them and you can just about pick out the truth behind the Middle East.

I live in Florida, and I get a fair amount of foreign news. Public radio and TV stations will generally carry the BBC and in south florida we have several spanish language cable networks that cover mostly central and south american news. Online, I visit the BBC and Agence France Presse websites. As has been noted in several preceding posts, every news outlet uses its own particular perspectives whether intentionally or not, so it is definately a good idea to sample as wide a variety as is practical.
Thanks for all that feedback.
A lot of Americans, who do care about what happens try to get an objective view of the news. This is heartening to me. Americans don't blindly believe what they are fed from the standard broadcasts and active seek alternative views, in order to get the full picture.
My view of Americans has improved with this response. You are just like all other people in the world, same issues, same problems, same concerns. And it is never American vs the world, and as mentioned previously, America is a subset of the world, with all their immigrants.
Again Thank you all
PS: Papewaio, Did you go to Suva Grammar ? I have a similar history to you, except Fiji.

Parents were expats in Fiji, spent 11 months then went to NZ and to Aus when I was 15.
I arrived in NZ age 4 from Holland, then Australia aged 17. Wife was from Fiji (also ex-pat) hence my interest.
Foxnews isn't completely unslanted... I mean, come on, they are the ONLY major media news outlet that calls Palestinian suicide bombers, Homicide Bombers.
Gawain of Orkeny

Well thats what they are their not just blowing themselves up that would be a suicide bomber they are blowing up and killing other people so the term homicide bomber fits them better

Im from the UK and I only ever watch the BBC news. They are the only trustworthy organisation left. For example they are funded by the tax payer in the UK and the government but they still dish the dirt on the government all the time and are not afraid to stand up to Blair and his spindoctors. The BBC is one of the only British institutions I am still proud of. God Bless The Queen http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

Wow Gawain, I love you man That's the nicest thing anyone's said to me in a long time... http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/gc-cry.gif
I voted Democratic in the CA recall a while back, but that was because I think the idea of a recall is horrible... direct democracy is just not cool for anything larger than a city, in my opinion. Also, I knew if Ahhhnold was elected we'd be a laughingstock. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/rolleyes.gif
I am not a Democrat, though, because I live in the Bay Area (San Francisco area, for those of you from far away) where I am swimming in a sea of liberals. Not bad people, overall, but they want government to do *way* too much. I am liberal in the cultural sense... let people do what they want (abortions, gay marriages, heroin... just tax it a little)
I guess you could say I am conservative economically--I believe in a free market with minimal (though some *is* important) government intervention. Especially when it comes to globalization/free trade/subsidies. Grrr...
Somewhere between libertarian (the libertarian party around here is just awful) and Free Trade Democrat, I guess.

OMG I better recheck my values as we almost agree on everything except abortion and gay marriage.I consider abortion murder and gays should be given the same rights as hetersexual marriages but be called something else> why couldnt we have kissed and made up before the Bush thread was closed http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/confused.gif

Why was it then that viewers of Fox News were far more likely to have incorrect views on major issues according to a recent survey? It's because the mighty Wurlitzer of Fox sells you the Right Wing Propaganda more heavily than the other networks. Fox's idea of a liberal/conservative talk show is to have one aggressive, outgoing guy representing the Far Far Right and one mild-mannered moderate that is supposedly liberal.
Gawain of Orkeny

1st of all what survey is this and by who.And incorrect views according to who. Most of the other networks give you very little of the conservative few and are positioned far to the left,I guess you must be speaking of hannity and combs in your 1 remark but their are plenty of other liberals on fox.I wonder why fox is the #1 news network in the world. How bout bill orielly how do you place him.Next you will be telling us that people who listen to talk radio are also uninformed and misled. Most surveys are weighted to give the answer the surveyor is looking for in my opinion. Please be a little more specific and give an example of some of the misconciptions the fox viewers have.

I don't know if that was meaningful, funny, or just dumb. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/confused.gif Sorry. If it keeps up like that, though, Gawain and I might have to go to Massachusetts (j/k)
Speaking of gay marriage, I think a constitutional amendment banning gay marriage would give the gays unfair protection. Yes, you heard me First of all, there's the marriage penalty for taxes. Also, that amendment would give gays the perfect answer to the question: Why won't you marry me? While straight guys have to make up some stuff like Well, it's not the right time, or I'm not ready for such a big step, gays have an easy way out Finally, an amendment like that would provide protection from in-laws Yes, if we straights have to put up with in-laws, then you guys do to, dagnabbit
