what formations u use that u had to make to ether defend ya self or attack. I came up with one when facing the turks. They seemed to like my right flank so i came up with this..

CCC
III
C S S S S S C
C G C

the frist 2 cavs in front row at to block the cavs coming my way. the other is to tease and distract any horse archers that might be heading my way. I also seemed I was also placed on a hill. so, if i need to i would re formate

C cav teasing archers

C C cavs blocking flanks goers

I I I arachers shooting teased arachers.

C -|
CCC |
SSSSS |----- charging into front lines. 75% of
G -| the time it broke the lines and
most undisplined units began to
rout.

I havnt got a name for this tatic.. nor do i know if it actualy might already be one.. but ill i know it has helped me beat the turks. :O)

formations, never use them.

i divide my army into several squadrons.

three units per squadron for cavalry and archers, two units per squadron for spearmen and men at arms/militia or other foot soldiers.

then i manouvre the squadrons to pinch off and/or isolate enemy units and destroy them.

never use one of your units to attack an enemy unit when two or three attacking it at once can do a better job. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

manouvre your units individually or in groups, but strike the enemy target as one, concentrating superior numbers and firepower at one point can break the enemy asunder. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/gc-2thumbsup.gif http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smokin.gif

My army looks like this for defense:

S S S S S
CC s s s s CC
A A A A G

bridge defense:

| |
| |
| |
| |
s s
s s
S S S
CC
G

For attacking:

C C C C
s s s s s s
S A S S G S

or:

S S S S G
C s s s C CCC

Legend: S = spear
s = sword
C = Cav
A = archers
G = Gen/King

I'd love to use formations, but I can't seem to get that ALT-click thing to work properly, so my men end up everywhere... http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/gc-oops.gif

Currently in the middle of my Italian campaign I'm using :

AAAAA
CC IIIIII CC
G

I like to have a wall of Archers first so as to soften up the advancing Army and then I pull my Infantry in front of my Archers to take the brunt of the charge. AS my Infantry are being hit I bring my Cav units around the flanks and ride up the back of the charging army. Usually I'll take 1 Cav unit to run down any Archers the Enemy might have. I rarely attack at all with my General. It's pretty simple and straight forward but it is effective. When I'm attacking I usually use the same formation and try and gain an environmental advantage and then send a Cav unit out to bait the Enemy to me so I can use my enveloping tactic. There are other strategies I use but this is the most common and most simple really.
