In STW I am wondering if you can upgrade to warlord addition from just the standard version or if they are not compadable. Because I have the choice of buying Shogun the normal version or shogun warlord addition and if I can just download the patch then there is realy no reason for me to buy the warlord addition.

Patched Shogun regular isn't equivalent to Shogun:WE. The warlord edition also includes the mongol invasion expansion and all it's enhancements.

AFAIK, the only way to upgrade to a warlord edition equivalent is to buy the X-pack for STW, if you can find it at all.
