View Full Version : disable generals dying of old age
Hi guys.
Ever since I installed VI, my generals started dying of old age. At first I welcomed the change as it is more realistic. Unfortunately, the unit I created with my own name and picture is not immune to this effect. I'm wondering if there's anyway of turning-off this feature.
I'm also restarting a Byzantine campaign, the last one ended tragically around 1250s. I'd like to know why the Steppe Cavalries I produce use Orthodox portraits instead of Pagan ones, and if there's anyway of changing that.
I appreciate any help you can provide. Thanks in advance.

have u installed the latest patch? I think that's supposed to fix some old age issues...
I think the patch only solves the problem where you monarchs always die at the age of 57.

Greetings and welcome jeff. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wave.gif
I think your dilemma on the general thing is going to be an either/or. You'll have to pick what is more important to you: immortality or game features.
I can't answer your question about Steppe Cav.

I've got VI (patched) and my generals only die if I play the viking campaign...how odd. That's pretty tight that you have your picture in the game though

All generals die, but you only get a message if it was a 4star or higher general.
If I remember correctly, one of the devs stated a certain command line switch that can influence the command-timespan of a general which currently averages out at 40 years.. you should do a topic search to find more info.

I found this a bit confusing when I started playing my recently patched (2.01) game. I felt that maybe I should get some indication that a particular General was getting old. Then I realised that any General who croaks is automatically replaced with a clone who has exactly the same stats. As far as I can tell the only problem you are left with is reassigning titles.

yep, the name changes, but accumulated rank and vices/virtues stay the same. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/gc-yes.gif

My generals heirs seem to keep the titles their predecessor had as well.
Having VI does mean no more 300 year old El Cids charging about the place, but unless you use the green generals command line their stats and V&Vs will live on.
Does green generals affect V&Vs, or just reduce the command rating of the replacement slightly?

I'm constantly playing with the green generals switch activated, however I tend to not pay as much attention to the development of the v&vs. From my experience however, there also seems to be a reduction of vices & virtues by one level after the old general has deceased. It may be random after all, but a change in the v&vs definitely takes place in my games.

Thanks for the welcome, Katar.
I have a feeling Fruitfly may be right about the title thing, I couldn't remember the specifics of them, and I was having a bit of Inquisitor trouble when my first few generals started to die of old age, so this could explain my mistake.
I find it difficult enough to keep track of my heirs without trying to keep track of all my generals as well, so I think I will be steering clear of the green generals switch for the moment
if you add -green_generals in your command line for your Medieval shortcut, your heir generals will be slightly poorer than the replacements, but can still improve on the old general. I find its a bit more realistic that way.

Does this apply to Heroes as well? Do they die in same time-span, and if so, are they replaced by another with same stats? Whatabout the name of replacement; is it also the same?

Yep, same for the heroes. That's how I created my own unit.
Oh well, I guess I'll be content with the fact that while my name and portrait are lost in time, someone is alive to carry on my accomplishments. I only hope the portrait the game randomly assigns is one of the better ones.
Thanks for all the help, guys.
