View Full Version : Assassins Rock
Dont you think assassins rock? Ive been playing as the Byzantines (my fav faction) and i prefer to play a slow game, building up my provinces, my armies and taking any nearby lands that rebel from time to time, anyway its about 1160 - ish and ive pretty much taken out the turkish, have most of the balkans and the egyptians have their own problems so im quite comfortable.
BUT... the italians have gone crazy, they own all of spain, all of north africa, all of southern france and most of modern day germany and much of the middle east, not to mention they have some major armies. I couldnt even hope to take them on even though i have half a dozen army stacks with 7 or 8 star generals with good troops and a number of other stacks with lesser generals, so i decided to go after the italian kings with my assassins.
Well........ after about 10 years i finished them off and it was soooooo nice to see all that land turn grey , in fact it was most of the world that i could see
Straight away i took the middle east and most of north africa and parts of southern france (i went for the weak provinces), THREE old factions suddenly reappeared and other existing factions started taking a few more of the rebel provinces.
The point is that by doing this it breathed new life into a game i might have given up on as i had no chance of winning against such a superpower.
The italians reappeared a few years later, 14 provinces joined their reappearance, that just goes to show how powerful they were after i alone took about 7 of their old ones.
So even if it looks like you cant win, try out them assassins and see what trouble you can cause, i'm thinking about doing it when the mongols appear

asassins are a good adjunct to armies when you decide to conquer the world, the only downside is that with VI + patch it becomes a lot harder to do this, enemy watchtowers are more effective at killing your asassins off. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/frown.gif

Assasins are fun, if you take Syria you´ll pump out 1+ valor assasins from there and with all the upgrades they´ll come out with 4 stars.

Assassins from syria come out with 2 extra stars, so with all the upgrades, they have 5*.

There seems to be an assassination addiction hidden in the game. I remember my first Geisha from STW: I actually delayed using her to kill my last rival, just to see to more of those animations http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif . But it cannot beat the thrill of a really good battle.

wow I didn't know that Must...pay...more attention to Region descriptions. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/gc-wall.gif
I sent 6 rookie assasins after a four star general and one of them actually managed to finish him off woot http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/gc-party2.gif while the other 5 met untimely deaths :(
Anyways, how come you can't assasinate Crusade generals?? or am I doing something wrong :/
I like a good battle as much as anybody but when a faction has built themselves up into as a big a superpower as the italians did, then carving their empire up into smaller chunks re-ignites your interest in the game where some people might just think, i cant win and click new campaign. I was nearly at that stage, now i cant wait to have another go at it to see what happens next

Question about assassin promotion. Can a five star assassin gain promotion if he kills enough 0 valor emmissaries? Or does he have to keep moving up the food chain? Also, I can't bring myself sometimes to kill princesses. Is anyone else having scruples?

I think the max is 9 stars aswell, i havent seen any assasins with more then 6 or 7 though but i ve seen inquistedors *spelling heh with 8 stars i had to take out the pope cause he was taking out my generals one by one http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smokin.gif
Pormotion by killing 0 valor emmisaries doesnt work well if your assasins is high level.

Absolutely right RTW should bring them back
Cheers
I dont like assassins who dont have a valor rating.
I lost 14 on a papal inquisitor who was wondering through europe burning my generals left right and center. he was 5 star. Eventually I got the spaz. But as I said, it took 15 years. Did my best to contain him with bishops but I still lost a good 8 generals :/ http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/gc-furious3.gif

Assasins DO rock I totall agree. I too like to mix my playing style to that of conquest and subtle destabilising of other regimes through politcal and covert means. (Assaination, inquisition) Valour 7 is the highest I have ever managed to get them though.
Also true, the ninja assasination vid-clips from Shogun were great, bring them back bring them back.
Must spin STW up again i think, a little trip down memory lane.
I havent played STW, so i dont know about the video clips, i only got MTW when the battle collection came out, but i know i can get STW for only a fiver so maybe ill check it out
My favourite use for assassins is to have a bunch of high valour (4-6) assasins sitting outside of rome. Whenever I get excommunicated I just send them in to get the pope and one of them is bound to kill him. It's their best use in my opinion. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/gc-2thumbsup.gif

You'll love it Though there is no blood... http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/mecry.gif the sounds people make when they die are pretty umm.... I should say gruesome. STW also has a throne room that has an updated map of Japan (borders and factions). I like to use it if I don't have any spies... cheating without using a cheat... hehehe

The throne room was added only when you installed the expansion pack or the warlords edition.
But I agree with Makkyo, it is a very good game, and it costs almost nothing now. The battle engine and graphics are almost on par with Medieval (I believe they used the same engines), the strategic map is smaller and there are less fractions, making the game easier to keep track of. There are only a few unittypes but of all of them have their uses. But most importantly: Shogun has a superior atmosphere to Medieval: it has beautiful music, a throne room to meet with emmissaries, you have the options to turn the voices into Japanese/Mongol and it has video's for Ninja / Geisha attacks. You don't know whether your (or your enemies') ninja is succesful until the end of the film. Truly beautiful
A pity EA is going to close down the multiplayer server in februari.

Throne room was in the original STW game long before the mongol invasion & yes the the vid clips where good until you've seen them a lot. You don't even have to install the game to have a look at them they where on the 2nd cd in the movies folder.
I use an alternative way of training my assassins. Hold Venice & just build a watch tower don't build a border fort & leave a 2 or 3 star assassin in it. There will normally be a lot of spies using Venice to travel around & he will catch them I have built up a 7 star assassin doin this & he only assassinated a pope or two & a load of crappy heirs. There are many other high traffic provinces on the map & the VI map has some aswell.
