This is a question that will slowly turn into a rant.

I am playing vanilla MTW. Can you not set up the order of reinforcements before a battle?

I did a search, and it seems like no, you need VI to set up reinforcement order pre-battle. The latest patch hasn't addressed this?

OK, I guess I answered my own question .. maybe. Now I can make a smooth transition into a rant.

I just fought a long tiring battle against the Mongols. I won but I would have done so far earlier and easier if I just could have had ranged unit reinforcments instead of contant spear unit reinforcements. How am i supposed to chase horse archers and light cavalry around with an army made up of Saracen Infantry and a few exhasted units of cavalry???? Like come on This never came up in the development stage??

Oh well, I'm not very good at ranting, and I love this game to much to really get to mad.

I guess I will just have to go out and get VI sooner than I thought I would need it. I would have bought it already but since the new battle pack came out, I can't find stand alone VI. And since I just bought MTW there is something to stubborn in me to buy it again so soon. But I guess I will have to so I can bring on the proper reinforcements I want. Anyone else in that position??

I can just see the General yelling at his staff: You idiots I said get those arbelests over here, not more bloody spearmen

Well, there is not really a quick way to change reinforcements. On the strategic map, the order in which the stacks are placed in the province is also the order in which the reinforcements come one, therefore you could either reduce the number of stacks or arrange their content in an alternating manner, so that you at least get one missile unit and one unit of a different kind for every two units of reinforcements you call on. The general's stack will always be the first 16 units displayed on the tactical map.

The other way is a tedious permutation of the units at the deployment phase, there is a button with which you can cycle through all reserve units, units that get replaced by another end up at the end of the reinforcement chain. So, you can arrange the order of all reinforcements but that requires a good memory as well as patience, as the permutations needed get longer the more reinforcements you have, therefore it's not really worth it.
In short, either get VI and the patch, or improvise in MTW using what you've got.

Wow, I didnt know that in vanilla MTW the reinforcements come on in the order they are stacked in the attacking territory. Thanks. I am playing Viking modded MTW now and the reinforcement selection is really helpfull, but for ages and ages I played old style and though it didnt bother me then I for sure could not live without that option.

I am playing with MTW vanilla with the latest patch. When I invade a province, it does not do this. It takes all the best units from all the stacks and puts them with my general. I then have to sort out the units back to what I wanted in the first place.

Also no matter how tedious it is before hand, I would have done anything to just get some more ranged units in my last battle with the Mongols. Would have shaved at least an hour off the length of the battle.

I will try your method for ordering units of reinforcements through use of multiple stacks.

Thanks.
