View Full Version : Is there a way to get the computer

It seems like even in the high period the computer only wants to build the simple cheap crappy units that my more professianal armies can roll right over. Is there a way to change the priorities to make them build better units?

medmod v2.04 from Wes' site (http://wes.apolyton.net/) will leave most of the basic game intact (no unit changes, a few map and building changes). Eliminates peasants by setting their build priority to zero. Also, in each era, gives each faction a bit more infrastructure so you see less cr@p running around.

medmod v3 makes many more changes, a whole new ballgame.

I'm a little wary of some of those changes...I guess I'll just have to give it a go anyway.

thats because the italians didn't knock at your door with 1 zillion spearmen. any catholic AI faction that gets an early lead in the early period will mass spearmen....... (and throw 10 stacks of them at you at some point)......

Ah, but a billion spearmen are better than a billion peasants ;). The problem is basically unsolvable, because the AI will always build the cheapest units in the largest quantities. No peasants? It will build spearmen instead. No spearmen? It will go for the next cheapest thing.

Can't the priority be set progressivly higher for more advanced units? They should then build the "more desired" units.

Maybe it is just too easy for the AI to consider itself "poverty stricken".

Actually, that's not true, believe it or not. What I found out in studying the units text is that CA set the build priorities for the cheapest units to skyrocket when a faction became poverty stricken, close to its support limit or in danger of being wiped out.
Since the priorities for buildings were too low in general and much too low for income producers, AI factions typically become poverty-stricken within the first decade or so of the game. This combination is what produces the crappy armies.

After straightening out the unit and building priorities, which took months of playtesting, we found that the AI will strive for modern, balanced armies if given the infrastructure and finances to attain them. Give the Medmod a chance, and I think you'll be very pleased with what you see.

I've been experimenting with using the C command line switch to change between factions during my turn. Although it maybe considered cheating i have help the English drive back the rapaging Almohads; repelled the Byzantine empire from Polish lands, and now helping the Turkish depleat the Egyptian uprising. I always switch back to my own faction before i end the turn. Some of the AI factions need some help with their buliding priorities http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/rolleyes.gif So i help them out Units and buildings that i would give high priority to, i queue up Even if it means i face a harder opponent further down the line

Although not a perfect solution, i'm having fun playing against stronger factions in my present campign http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/bigthumb.gif

P.S Is there anyway to actually alter the AI? I know that different factions adhere to certain rules: catholic_trader, catholic expansionist etc... But is there anyway to add new faction strategies? Or at least alter the existing ones Or is it all hardcoded??? http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/confused.gif
