Well... a loss against the computer that should not have happened the other day opened my eyes to the fact that the armor penalties for desert warfare are VERY real. So, I'm trying to come up with a decent formula for an army that can hack it in the desert (lots of wealth to be had there).

As the spanish, Jinettes/mounted seargants/feudal seargants would make up the bulk of an army, but I need something to replace the CMAA and have no idea what to use.

OR... am I approaching desert warfare all wrong? I suppose one could try and use skirmish tactics, the the spanish (and most christian armies for that matter) don't seem to have a unit selection that lends itself to such pursuits.

In multiplayer the val 4 clansmen are good along with high valor militia sarges. Dont know if ya have those in your campaign tho .

OOOOHhhhhh... you just gave me an idea. Ireland is usually a rebel province if starting from early, so...

Gallowglasses I'm not sure how far up the tech ladder you can go before they start to become useless, but my suspicion is that in high numbers (they are DIRT cheap) they would be just nasty for desert warfare. Say 6 fast/light vavalry of some type and the rest gallowglasses.

Gallowglasses absolutely rule in the desert. They'll cut through enemy spears like a hot knife through butter.

It might be worth taking some vanilla archers along too, as they're useful for thinning out the numbers of enemy camels which will cause your jinetes and mounted sergeants problems otherwise.

IMO a good stack of 16 units for the Spanish to take into desert warfare would be 3xFS 4xVA (vanilla archers), 4xJinetes/mounted sergeants, 4xGallowglasses/Clansmen and 1xGeneral.

Definelly Galowglasses for the bulk of infantry, and spearmen without armour upgrades to defend against cavalry

Vanilla just means plain or unimproved. Or at least it does when I use it in that context.

So vanilla archers would just be the normal bog-standard archer unit.
