View Full Version : Janissary Heavy Infatry - Overpriced?
Well.. I was playing around with them in the custom battles simply because I'd seen lots of good things on this forum about them... and I was very unimpressed.
While the JHI seems to be a very potent unit in and of itself, I simply found that they really sucked on a bang for the buck scale. The german army I made for the same price as 4 (valor 1) JHIs absolutely spanks them due to
a) a relatively minor difference in individual unit effectiveness
b) The increased flexibility due to the higher unit count.

JHI will get spanked every day under the sun in custom / MP battles when fighting with equal florin.
A good old Militia Sergeant for 1253 fl is Valour 4 got 6 AP attack and 7 defense. And 8 morale.
A JHI valour 1 cost 1232 fl got 6 AP attack (9 vs cav) and 4 Defense (5 vs cav) with a morale of 10.
Summing up Attack + defense for militia sergeant we got 13. JHI scores 10 fighting vs infantry and 14 vs cavalry. Both got armor piercing, so that does not matter.
JHI is only 1 pt better than Militia Sergeant against cav... but 3 pts worse vs infantry.
Conclusion; not worth the money.
In Campaign however, valour is mainly determined by your general rank and does not cost a single fl more. Under the same general, militia sergeant and JHI would have the same valour... And then JHI gets much better.
Initial cost for SP campaign is irrelevant.

Louis,
I kind of figured that the allure of the JHI must be single player. I can't ever recall a SP campaign where florins were an issue beyond the first 50-100 years.
Yes JHI are overpriced.
All unitcosts are calculated by a formula. Factors like anti cav stats, attack ,defense, armourpiercing, shield etc are put into that formula. On some of the units CA made some mistakes and JHI is one of them.
They are paying for a large shield (the defense bonuses that comes with a shield) but that shield does not give anything in melee because they use a two handed weapon. There is a costreduction just not big enough.
Another thing is the anti cav stats (+3 attack, +1 defense) One could argue that the extra cost for these bonuses makes all polearm equipped units too costly. When comparing them to units that doesnt have anti cav bonuses, like militia sergeants, then they will have a clear disadvantage in cost.
But these problems are really only seen in custom/MP battles and not in SP.
