View Full Version : Who's a big Osprey Military collector too?

Well, I haven't got that much up to now, I've been collecting for quite some time, but only occasionally I buy a booklet.
I just looove the artwork....
....especially those of Angus McBride and Graham Turner.
A nearby bookshop has shelves full of Osprey material, and everytime I come there, for whatever reason (buying books for college etc)I find it mightely difficult to resist buying some booklets.
I buy it mostly for the artwork; I like to use the art as an example to draw some military figures myself (I'm a lousy artist though, but my drawings start to look better and better). Of course, the information is interesting as well; I mean, think of it. Someone someday might suddenly ask you: 'So, what do you think of 14th century Scandinavian warfare, sir?' And you are unable to reply because it turns out you don't own Medieval Scandinavian Armies (2) http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/gc-wall.gif What do you do then? What do you do then?...
So far, I own some books on French and Italian medieval armies, just bought Medieval Scandinavian Armies (2) today; I've got some books on Ancient Chinese armies and lots about samurai warfare. I think I'll start collecting some staff on Napoleonic armies, or ancient Greece, or the Wehrmacht, Moghul warfare, Zulus, Aztecs...
http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/gc-dizzy2.gif So much time, so little money... http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/frown.gif
And you, sir or lady, are you an Osprey Military Madman just like me? http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/gc-toff.gif

I have to order them via Internet but they are invaluable for my MTW modding and they are just plain interesting. I've got 5 books covering the Wars of the Roses and its battles plus some books covering other medieval armies. The maps and the amazing art of Graham Turner makes them worth the money. The books will certainly save alot of time browsing the internet for tidbits of how medieval armies worked and looked like.
Excellent stuff
Cheers, Duke John
got some of the Celt, Greek, Macedonian and Roman book, very good work.
i was sad to hear that Angus passed away several years ago, his input made the books a lot more accessable, and enjoyable. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/cheers.gif

I have to agree about Angus McBride. Really beautifull artwork.

I've got half a shelf full of them, some 60+ titles spanning from ancient Egypt up to sengoku Japan with a lot of Romans and knights in shiny armour in between. Taken me at least 9 years to collect that many. I have to order them off the net these days, although there is this shop in the city my dad works in that sells them so he brings back the odd one or two occasionally. I prefer Gerry Embleton, Christina Hook and Graham Turner for artwork, Angus is good most of the time but it never quite matches up to those others in my eyes. But that's the thing with art - all in the eye of the beholder.
I guess I should be ashamed of myself for only having one. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/mecry.gif
That one is even about the Messerschmidt 109 which is probably sacrilege on this board.

I don't even know what they are talking about. The best I can gather is that there is a series of Osprey (?) books with pictures on military subjects. Could somebody please explain?
I'm looking for a new book now, because the book I am reading at this moment is not suited for when you want to relax. Like I want to do, because I've got a big exam coming.

You gather correctly sir. Books on various military subjects, ranging from armies, weapons, uniforms, indvidual battles, flying aces etc. from the beginning of civilization and almost to modern times. Heavy emphasis on pictures.

I once saw a book called Normally Distributed Random Numbers which contained exactly what the title describes. It is guaranteed not to excite you too much.

Osprey military history books (http://www.ospreypublishing.com/) some books are better than others but most are good. The one on Roman gladiators has a reputation for being particularly bad, I don't have that one.
abebooks is good i tend to use them nearly all the time. there delivery dates are extremly good and prices are very good to. i purchased byzantine wars by john haldon on sat it arrived on monday. and only five days for a book from the USA there is a link on the entrance hall site under the books but with out doubt this is my personal favorite site to deal with. eithier buying new or second hand. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wave.gif

I've got about seventy and Angus Mcbride pictures are amazing. His top 3 pictures i've seen are his Hastings one in the Norman Elite book, his last stand picture in the Viking Elite book and and the mongol warrior fighting the Teutonic knights at Liegnitz in The Mongols.
Also if anyone can get there hands on Warriors and warlords by Tim Newark and angus mcbride, they will adore the pictures inside. Are you sure angus is dead? Its just that the Hussite Wars is released this may and he does the plates .

i could have sworn that he had passed away, two to four years ago, i`ll have a look on the net to check for sure.

I have bought a few of them based on the Napoleonic armies, for research and artwork for the Nap mod. Would love to buy more though, but at $30 a book its an expensive hobby. I keep dreamin ill stumble across someone who has the whole collection and doesnt want them anymore and ill be more than happy to have them.
Theres a store near my work that has tonnes of them, i go there in my lunch breaks and go through them all, i think i piss the shop owners off though cuz i rarely by them.
So if anyone wants to give their copies aways u know where to find me http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wave.gif

Thirty bucks My God, if that's what you have to pay for them you are getting screwed. Even if Aussie dollars are only about 75% of an American dollar that's horrible. In the U.S., the standard Men-At-Arms books are about $12.00. I've bought most of mine used for about $6.00.
There has to be some internet source available so you can get a better deal... Ebay or something.
I've been collecting them for years. I've got most of the titles on ancient and medieval warfare. Most of them are quite good although you find the odd mistake here and there. The Late Roman Infantryman title was particularly bad for that kind of thing.
I've had a few armies worth of 15mm ancients painted up, and I color-copied material out of some of the Ospreys for painting instructions. Very useful.

I am pretty sure Angus isn't dead. There have been appearing a number of recent books with his artwork, including Medieval Scandinavian Armies. If he's dead, than he's a very good artist for a zombie. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/gc-inquisitive.gif
As for Graham Turner: I doubt that I have ever before seen such gorgeous artwork. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/gc-stunned.gif

i wasn`t able to find out if he is dead or alive.
i really hope he isn`t, but i could have sworn i read his obituary in a history magazine several years ago.
if rumours(started by myself http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/gc-blush.gif ) of his death have been exaggerated i`ll gladly eat humble pie. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/gc-yes.gif

I have quite a few from my tabletop days. We used them for painting guides. The details of those full plates is brilliant
The Men at Arms are about £8 and the Elites are about £10 hereabouts though Amazon has a good range including second hand.

Try type in 'Angus McBride Obituary' on your browser...
You'll get links about some guy called Angus McDonald, who I suspect of having been a professional bagpiper or something http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/gc-stunned.gif
Maybe that was the guy you meant...
I own a few dozen, mostly pre 18th century topics, especially Roman era, Asian empires and the Middle Ages. I usually get formerly owned but good condition Osprey's at wargame conventions for $8 to $10.

Romano-Byzantine Armies 4th-9th
Byzantine Armies 886 - 1118
Byzantine Amries 1118-1461
Byzantium at War
Rome at War 2?? - 6??
No prizes fo guessing what I like.
Me is thinking of getting some Rome's enemies books like
the desert frontier and parthians and sassanids.
Although, I'm interseted in getting some ROman titles.
So much to buy, so little money to blow on it and too long to wait for it as it is imported from Britain :(
MeTHINKS, we should make our own military titles on the org.
Org.Publishing. Of course, its got to be posted on the net.
WHich one of us could afford a printing factory?
