Howdy . I am playing my first game and have over extended , many units are very depleted and sea routes are blocked . It would take six or seven turns to get these units back for refit at upgraded facilities , would it be worth it or should I merge them with unupgraded units . It is a pity that armour and weapons upgrades are not tracked individually like valour is . BTW great site with plenty of info . http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/cheers.gif

Errr, to my knowledge armor, weapons, morale, valor is tracked for individual soldiers. So there is no downside to merging samevalor units. Well, there is no downside to merging at all.

About your question, I think that it would be much better to have a 60 man unit of unarmoured unit and keep the new province than to have a bunch of 10 man units which chances are would rout quicker due to their small number of men. Some people think of it as cheap, but if you keep saving every year, you can keep them unmerged, and only merge them if someone attacks you. If they do, reload and merge away. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/cheers.gif

Merging units is certainly worth it. I always keep an army of depleted units behind the front line to fill up veteran units that have sustained casualties. I seldom bother to retrain, only in special cases (I do retrain important generals to get them upgrades).

Honour / valour IS kept track of on individual basis (so displayed honour / valour is the average of the honour / valour of the individual soldiers in the unit), but weapons- and armour upgrades aren't.
So if you add soldiers of an unarmoured unit to a fully armoured unit, the new soldiers will receive full armour too However, this also works the other way: add soldiers from a fully armoured unit to an unarmoured unit, and the new soldiers will lose their armour.
So be careful what you merge.
