The great bane of my life lately has been a losing streak in multiplayer games. I always play as attacker, because I think it's more of a challenge that way. The normal army layout I usually see is 5 muskets, 2 Cav archers, 2 Super Ashi to protect the flanks, 2 Yari Cav and 2 Nagi Cav, all at the flanks, along with 2 No-dachi, and the general unit being a highly upgraded Yari Samurai. I use this layout as well. Problem is, the defender has the advantage of waiting for my troops to get into position, thus giving him first volley with the muskets. Other than waiting for rain, is there any other way to win this kind of straight shooting battle?
Next, I don't know if its just me, but is flanking the enemy only really an option in a 2 vs 2 or higher? I can't flank the opponent in a straight 1 vs 1.

Hehe, off topic, but I really don't get that signature of yours.
I have seen the emperor's pictures, and he is just a withered man.
Shoguns? ha!!!!!

the only way to win a 1v1 is to flank the enemy, and 1 volley won't mater, cos winning the musket battle doesn't mean a whole lot if your quick. only use tho nagi cav for flanking, never run then straight into anythink, its a waste.
Engage the guns and attack while they are occupied with the shootout. Just make your move while you still have guns around to keep them honest -- if you wait 'till they rout, the battle will have become harder to win. As long as there is SOMETHING returning fire, your men eating lead don't take a morale penalty. The penalty is taken only if enemy fire is NOT returned. http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/smile.gif (At least, I think so... http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/confused.gif )

remember that muskets have several weaknesses. missile fire, particulary arrows, can devastate a gun unit rather quickly. muskets dont work well in rain. muskets are crap in melee. muskets, in certain circumstances, will kill their own people and muskets will sometimes not even open fire on their own. and muskets rout rather easily. so even though they sometimes seem like formidable opponents, they are definitely not invincible.
try working with them and against them in single player scenarios. run a few tests. learn how to make them rout. learn how to force an enemy to direct his fire at what you want it directed to. learn how to make guns retreat into the back ranks. learn how to make your guns fire more effectively, particularly at other gun units. study trajectories...yup. guns do fire on a curved arc. learn how to use this to your advantage. there's lots of tricks to make your guns survive and whither your enemy's guns to nothing.

Everyman dies, but not everyman truly lives.
Also... ever wonder why they give Ashigaru and teppo those conical hats? Let me tell you why! The shape makes a nice point. So, the soldier just lowers his head and charges into the enemy lines. If he is lucky, he can strike somebody with the point of his hat... and maybe even bruise the chap!
Fodder? Think twice about that...!
