I am seeking to get information on the battles of the English civil war, particularly involving the exploits of Oliver Cromwell and his “preaching” cavalry. I am especially interested in information on the types of soldiers used at the time, the equipment they carried, strategies used by the Royalists and the Parliamentary forces, battlefield maps, etc. Can someone point me in the direction of a couple of good books or websites? It would be most appreciated.

p.s. could one of the admins please move this to the Monastery?

Welcome to the Org Uberskooper.

If the links Lauralanthalasa provided or information anyone else may provide isn't enough, I will be glad to copy this post over to the Monastery forum.

Nope, I'm sorry to say the information provided was not enough. Though very informative, I could find generic historical facts by typing Cromwell's name into a search engine and clicking any one of the first ten websites that pop up. I am actually looking for information pertaining to the actual conflict (battles) of the English civil war. Particularly battle accounts, the analysis of strategy used in those battles, and the description of the types of troops involved (or perhaps just the 17th century in general).

Also, thanks for the welcome guys. I've been a long time lurker on this forum, but I have been motivated to join mainly due to the fact that I have to write an essay and create a power point about a great leader in battle of my choice. I chose Cromwell because ‘Lord Protector’ is an awesome title and because the style of warfare in the 17th century is an interesting mixture of the old and the new.

I was hoping some of you history fanatics could help me out.

Uberskooper ; For Cromwell and civil war in Britain , try a search for Sealed Knot . For Cromwell in Ireland , don't even go there

I would reccomend you to the various Books by the Historian Richard Holmes (The guy who does War Walks on the BBC) he and Peter young are the acknowledged experts on ECW and the Cromwellian period.

Ter are some good Osprey books on some of the principle battles, Naseby, Marston Moor, and the Cornish campaigns.

If the battles specifically are what you are interested in, why not just enter them into a search engine one by one? Of course, a visit to your local library would be preferable.

Uberskooper, I copied your original post into the Monastery forum. You can find it here (http://www.totalwar.org/cgi-bin/forum/ikonboard.cgi?act=ST;f=3;t=14997;r=1;&#top).

Since you are unable to post in the Monastery forum, I've directed them to come to this topic to provide any information they may have.
