View Full Version : Anyone watch Discovery Times Channel?
Ive been watching alot on Byzantium on this channel. So far I think I've seen about 9 different hour long shows. They are all done by the same guy and are very good. Everything is very detailed and on location. The last one I watched the other night was on the fall of Constantinople to the Turkish Sultan Mehmet. If you like history, which I'm guessing many of you do, it is a great show. I am hoping the host is going to do more on some of the other ancient civilizations. Anyways, has anyone seen the shows and if so do you know the hosts name?

Unforunately I only get the Discovery channel. They did do a special on greek fire awhile back otherwise, they really don't do much about Rome. History also tends to focus on the Western Roman Empire, and doesn't have many shows concerning the Eastern Roman Empire.
Have fun watching discovery, but be wary of the info they present; Discovery documentaries are the subject of a running joke among history students, because of the enormous amount of inaccuracies, incomplete or highly debatable views being presented as absolute truth etc.
In short, take it about as seriously as Braveheart and you'll do fine ;)

Yeah I pretty much view discovery as a educational show for dummies. Or a comedy for people with good historical knowledge. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/gc-jester.gif
The History channel is only slightly better when it comes to history. They are pretty accurate on subjects that have nothing to do with war, and "real" history. They did a daylong 'history of fast food' which, I guess was accurate http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif
If you wanna learn history you gotta http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/gc-book2.gif
Well as a 31 year old father of 2 children I do not consider myself a dummy. Nor have I seen too many discrepancies in the info that I have seen. Granted I am not watching hours and hours of Discovery, but I do pick programs out which I think will be enlightening and entertaining. Their series on both the Greek and Ottoman empires were superb. And as far as I can tell, from what I've read regarding those two subjects, were very accurate in detail. Anyways, I was just wondering if anyone had seen it and if they knew who the host was.

The best thing I saw on the History Channel was the four part program on the Spartans. A reasonable amount of academics and the renactments were'nt too cheesy. God, I'd love to see something on Byzantium
pshh history channel >> discovery channel. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/gc-book2.gif

Jeff I was being sarcastic http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif
I do like discovery they, do have good show but, I find most of their shows which concern history contain inaccuracies. Then again much of history is open to interpretation. I've yet to see the programs regarding the Greek, and Ottoman empires so I can't comment on them.
Spartans at The Gates of Fire was a great series based on the book with the same name. I've ordered the book but, it hasn't come in yet http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/mecry.gif
Yep I agree, History is open to interpretation. As well as the shows and books based on history. I have not read "Spartans at the Gate of Fire" but I should like to take a gander.
