View Full Version : Is "El Cid" bugged?

Playing Spain the last three times I bribe El Cid the first year as he is a 5 star commander.
No matter how many battles this guy wins he never get a 6th star BUT on the pre-battle deployment screen his "true" value 6, 7 or 8 is shown but he doesn´t "behaive" like a 8 star general. When he dies the unit will rise in command so maybee El Cid is bugged?

Hi
Does he perhaps have the virtue of "excellent attacker or defender". This could lead to the "upgrade" in the battle deployment, i.e. showing his amount of stars in this particular situation. As long as he just stays on the map, only his basic stars will be shown. Click on him and check out his virtues.
Hope this helps.
Cheers

hes an expert attacker so when he attacks he get 2 extra stars.

Well, I didn´t know that BUT is the fact that he is a 5 star on the gamemap and an 8 star in battledeloyment the same reason?

if the battle deployment has him on the attacking side, yes.

Also, if he's +5 on the camp map in friendly territory and +8 when you move him to a foreign territory, then El Cid has become an even better attacker. He starts with a +2 to attacking, but it sounds like you've used him to attack enough times that he's now +3, so nice job.

As Servius said, El Cid starts out with 5 ommand stars and has a virtue called Expert attacker which gives him another two stars when he leads an attack. Thus when you attack with him, he will be that much more deadly.

Sometimes, things work in reverse though. For example Spanish king starts out as a Field Defense Specialist (+3 command when defending) meaning hat the game shows him with 7 stars. Well, 3 of those stars come from his defender virtue meaning that he is actually a 4 star general who just happens to be realy good on defense. So if you attack with him, it will look like he lost stars because he will be a 4 star commander.

It may be confusing at first, I know I had problems understanding how these details worked, but eventually you will start to recognize the generals not just for the number of stars they have but mostly for the virtues/vices taht they possess.

Cheers,
Rev

Thanks guys That explains it all.

Can u imagine I´ve been playing this game for so long and still find new things to learn about it - talk about a well worth spent 40$, he he

The above posters are correct - he must have an 'attacker' virtue. Skilled attacker is +1 star, Expert is +2 and Specialist Attacker is +3.

If you are on the attack, keep a close eye on El Cid's stack... when you move him from his initial province to the province he is attacking, you will see the number of stars change when you plop him down in the province he is attacking.

BTW, when I was the Almos, El Cid was awesome for me. I bribed him early and then made him Master's of the Khalifah's Horse or Admiral of the Fleet (or something) and he ended up at 9 stars and specialist attacker +3 and marched all over the board for me. 75-80% of the map was orange by the time the Golden Horde came along...

Meanwhile, when I was the Spanish a long time back, he resisted my 2 or 3 bribe attempts. (And I thought he was Catholic in real life?)

Quick historical note: he was catholic in the first place but was exiled from Castille after questioning the role of the king (King Alfonso) in the murder of the previous king (Sancho, Alfonso's brother and the Cid's friend and protector). He then started behaving like some mixture of a freelance knight and outright mercernary.
I have no idea whether that's in the game, but if it is, he should be more likely to accept a bribe from the Almos or Aragon than Castille as he often fought alongside muslim lesser kings as well as christians.

Quick note on El Cid: He can be bribed by the Germans, Byzantine and Egyptians. All these factions start off with emmisaries and all can have those agents bust ass to the nearest port to get to Genoa (at least I THINK its Genoa. Closest port to Valencia anyways) Just run to Valencia and bribe. El Cid may be attacked by the Almohads or the Spaniards. Just retreat off the field in combat and pay the ransom.

Funny thing happened when I got him as the Egyptians. I ordered him to go on a Jihad to retake Valencia and he succeeded. A couple of turns later, there is a coup and El Cid becomes Ali I, ruler of Egypt.

Are those the ONLY other factions he can be bribed by besides Spanish and Almohads? Italians? English? French?

I can't imagine why the other factions couldn't, it's just easier since those factions have emissaries and are close to the sea.

PS: Ali I? Wow...

The English always fail. Or at least I tried it 5 times and got nowhere. El Cid is always invaded early in the game. The AI doesn't bribe him. I haven't tried it as the French or Italians but you need an emmissary to bribe him. If a faction doesn't start with one, they can't do it.

At the start of early he is in valencia. For the first three of four turns he is more expensive to bribe (5500 ish after turn three of four he's cheaper (just over 3000) and it seems during the first 3 or 4 he's much more likely to resit the bribes aswell. Unfortunately, the spanish or almo's tend to attack about turn 5, so you gotta be quick to get him cheap.
