New patron Uberskooper posts the following in the Entrance Hall:

I am seeking to get information on the battles of the English civil war, particularly involving the exploits of Oliver Cromwell and his “preaching” cavalry. I am especially interested in information on the types of soldiers used at the time, the equipment they carried, strategies used by the Royalists and the Parliamentary forces, battlefield maps, etc. Can someone point me in the direction of a couple of good books or websites? It would be most appreciated.

Phew - where to start

For an excellent background to Cromwell's life I cannot recommend enough Antonia Frazer's book 'Cromwell - Our Chief of Men', published by Phoenix Press.

For a good overview of the causes, battles and the troops that fought them, you might try Volume 2 of Battles in Britain by William Seymour; I'm not sure if this is still in print though, the edition I have is almost 30 year old http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/gc-stunned.gif

The publishers Osprey do a couple of books in their Elite series, one on infantry, the other on cavalry and specialist troops.

Other than that you can go as deep as you like into the minutiae of the period - go here www.caliverbooks.com and you'll see what I mean

Good luck and welcome aboard http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/bigthumb.gif

As Auxilia stated,

the Osprey books are nice.. not too expensive, and to expansive.. quite an easy read.. they have a few books in their Campaigns series as well dealing with the battles...

The battles they have:
Edge Hill (1642)(volume LXXXII).
First Newbury (1643)(volume CXVI).
Marston Moor (1644)(volume CXIX).
Auldearn (1645)(volume CXXIII).
[/list]

I think I need to look more closely at Osprey's website cos I had no idea they'd done these http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/gc-oops.gif
