Hi All,

I have seen this a number of time, but yesterday it just pissed me off too much.

Playing English I had taken over Egypt from the Egyptians, all was fine had a nice large force about 2000 men (too much heavy cavalry), but still not a bad situation.

The Egyptians then invade with about 3000 men good troops and lots of camels (they are really hard to beat in warmer places. I had to send multiple troops of cavalry and infantry do destroy one unit of Camels.

The 3 catapults did a fine job spreading havoc upon the enemy and demolishing lots of troops.
And as soon as they run out of ammo, like a good general I ordered them out of the fight
One would think good so, allow new troops to come in, I do this all the time with used up archers, infantry and any other unit that has run out of ammo, or is just plain tiered. But what happens is instead of them leaving the area, they start marching backwards and forwards between the edge of the map and the enemy force. Not only am I denied the needed reinforcements, but an expensive and experienced unit is made into second-rate dog food

If this was a once off I might understand, but it seem to happen with all my siege units
Any one else takes the message to piss off, (and are usually happy to go), but not these guys What the
I have even micro managed them before taking them to the edge of the map, and then ordering them to leave Also it does not seem to make a difference if the machinery is destroyed And having this guys hanging at the edge of the map mean 3 units less to be able to fight with

By the way the shear luck of having an almost depleted unit of mounted xbow men saved my ass 12 mounted xbows distracted all the enemies’ heavy cavalry, till the first attack wave was over

The battle was won with 340 of my dead vs. 1260 of theirs A good result for an army in the wrong terrain

The problem is mercenary troops can not be joined or merged or allowed to recover in any way, so now I have one lost unit and two that are so depleted that they will have to be disbanded I find it easier to bye siege weaponry from the inn

Has anyone else had this problem? And or know a solution

Just in case (late period, Hard (as the English))

have you tried routing the artillery units instead of withdrawing ? That always works for me :).

And one piece of advice, never ever ever ever ever ever, send any amount of cav to take care of camels :).

their main weakness is their low armour and they die fast from arrows, horse archers are real camel killers since camels are too slow to catch them. my poor camels hate horse archers :(

Were they stuck on trees? There is a bug that if you try to withdraw a unit and it goes through woods on its way out, then some of teh soldiers may get stuck in the undergrowth LOL and cant leave the map. One way to solve it is to tell them to Halt (hit Backspace) and wait till tehy march out of the red zone. Once in the yellow you have to manually walk them to a nonforested edge of the map where you can tell them to withdraw.

It is most anoying whne its the enemy units that cant withdraw because of this bug. I once lost as Welsh because 3 Saxon celtic warriors were hiding in trees and I couldnt find them or shoot them LOL and the timer ran out (I was attacking)

However, if your problem doesnt involve trees then I do not know the reason for the malfunction.

Thank Guys, :o)

1) I did not try to rout my artillery units, as I was under the impression that this reduced the units’ valour.

2) My problem was that I came to the border with Egypt and could not resist taking an unprotected rich land. I was unprepared for the following battles, but fighting without the use of cavalry units in almost all campaigns is just an excuse for getting one’s butt kicked. As a result the cream of the Egyptian army has been greatly reduced, and one of their kings is dead.

I did for the first time put peasants to good use last night (necessity is the mother of invention) They can really do havoc when flanking an enemy’s unit That and chasing away weaker archers

My next step is to remove my King to Wessex and allow his unit to be built up again

There are no major areas of trees in Egypt (at least from what I have seen so far)

I seem to have had this problem in France, Iberia and now in Africa Green Plains, forests, deserts

If I know before a battle that our armies are matched and small it is not a big problem It is just a pain when I have to send for reinforcements, because my Long bows are out of ammo, and the first rout of the enemy has not yet happened

I do not think the English would have won Agincourt with just 28 arrows per bowman But it kind of seems like cheating if I go and change this

I have also found that when I automatically resolve battles the artillery units always loss 1 to 3 men, rendering them useless in less than a couple of fights

I've had a similer prob like this but with archers instead. I was up against the horde and was trying to get rid of an archer unit with only 2 or 3 men in it. I told them to rout and off they went towards the edge of the map but half way there they found a new confidence and rallied. This happened so many times i actually had to keep routing them and had very little control of the rest of my army because of them(not what you want in a battle against the GH http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/angry.gif)
