View Full Version : Muslim factions
So Will you be like me...? I like playing Turkish because of the janissary units and because of the position and easy takings in early era.
It is fun take Istanbul http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/gc-toff.gif and Turks late units are better than other Islamic units.
Toying whit jihads is fun too..... Janissary Heavy Infantry is best unit in the game....I Think.. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

The Turkish are fun nice mixture of troops but i voted Egypt cause i like the desert and their desert type units besides they get some realy fun generals aswell heh
There all great but the Turkish range units are some of the besst.
I go for Egyptians as they give me a better sense of Islam than Turks and Almos. Turks are powerful true, but they are not still %100 identified with Islam at that time, there were still some Turcoman tribes believing in ancient Goktanri religion. On the other hand, Almohads are a bit orange for me to play and historically I am not a big fan of Andalucian Muslim heritage.
Egypt gives a hardcore fanatic Islam sense, which gives you a more accurate reason to yell charge order Allahallahallahallah without having to doubt whether the guy charging with you prays 5 times a day or prays to Gods of nature.
Gah Where's the Gah option?
Why choose one?
The Almohads are great fun, especially in early with AUMs and Berber Camels.
Egypt has Abbys and Bedouins. Don't forget the Faris.
The Almos and Egyptians are fast and pretty tough.
The hybrid Turkish troops like Janis, Ottomans, Turcomans can, when used properly, shoot and fight. Futuwwas come with high valor and can stand up to good Catholic troops. The Turkish cav archers are one of the best ways to deal with the heavy Byz Kataphraktoi generals or Catholic Chiv Knights.
While they share common units (Hashishin, Ghulam Cav) they each have very interesting unique units. In SP their starting positions each present a slightly different challenge. In MP their unique units can present a real problem to Catholic opponents.
I like 'em all

Turkish becuase they have a great starting position and unique units, and I like crushing the Egyptians' pathetic peasant armies for some reason http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/tongue.gif
The Turks, defeating the descendants of Rome is great fun.

When i started to play SP i always played muslim fraction.
First Almohads, then turks and finally egypts.
Turks and egypts are funny to play. Turks have the collest units, nice Hybrids and fast Horsearchers at start.
Egypts are also funny cause of the nice troop selection. (camels, Horsearchers, and Abyss)
In Multiplayer muslim fractions are compared with euros weak. Thats why i play in MP nearly always europes.

I voted Turkish because I find their units are awesome... Even their earlier units such as Turcoman Horse and Turcoman Foot are incredibly fun to use.
And when the JHI's are rolling out, everyone had better watch out

While its a rookie faction in the early period, I like the Almohads.
There are early, fierce battles with the Spanish and then peasant massacres of the Egyptians. They have AUM, bonused dhows, bonused Saharan Cavalry, and bonused Berber camels.

I prefer the Turks because of their interesting units and their ability to stay competitive throughout the game (ahem: Almos). There's nothing like pumping out Janissaries from the time they're available till the end of the game http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

I like the Almohads best, they have the fewest and most basic units of the Muslim factions and this forces you to get the most out of them, especially in Late.
I haven't played the Turks yet and I can't choose between the other two, which only goes to show that the GAH-option really is needed in polls like these.
I'm currently playing the Almohads and I've knowingly been using a terrible strategy. I kept the peace through the whole of the early era, and thus negated the advantage of Almohad urban militia in that era. It's the year 1260 and I'm still at peace with the Spanish. Having picked a fight with the Mongols now, I can see this campaign will be fought uphill.

Oh, defensive Almohad campaign, one of my favourites If you can get a navy up then you only need to defend Cordoba and Cyrenaica/Egypt. It can become boring at times http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif
I voted Turkish because of theor already mentioned awesome units. But I absolutley love the Egyptian lands. Almost every game I play my first priority is to take the egyptian lands. If I'm Spanish, I only kill the Almos to get my way to egypt. If I'm German, I crusade like hell to get my way over egyptian lands. I must say I love to take the holy lands and Egypt. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/cheers.gif

Turks, but I like to play from early. Very dangerous period fer them turkish boys, everyone is either stronger, faster or more numerous than them. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/gc-anxious.gif
Plus the loyalty of turkish princes and high ranking generals is a disaster. Talk about disfunctional families. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/gc-confused.gif
Yet if they survive to the late era, there's a good chance they'll rule the map.

Early- Turkish.....best period ever. You're cornered by the Byzantines and the Egyptians and you need to get some land, fast.
Turcoman horse archers are one of the most fun units to use. I don't like the Egyptians cause their units are really lame. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/rolleyes.gif

According to the era description, Egyptians are probably the easiest, plus i have never played as the other two, so i voted egyptians.

It looks like we've got some new people to welcome.
Greetings and warm welcome to Glory, FetalPig and The Programming Dragon. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wave.gif Enjoy your time here at the Org.
I enjoy playing the Turks the most. They have a nice variety of Units and I can't think of anything more fun than sacking Constantinople http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/cheers.gif
I would have picked the turks but they have just annoyed me in my current game, so I voted for the Almo's out of Spite http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/gc-argue.gif

I prefer to play defensive Egyptian trader and build a big fleet and lots of Mamluks... http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif
Quite fun. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif
And being in a rather pressed in position is fun and killing Crusaders is fun too :)
the turks have a great mix of mobility and strength, making them a great faction to have that can handle a variety of situations. GO TURKS
I've never played as a muslim faction. I'm used to incredibly long wars with the Almos though, man those cats fight to the burger.
I think I'll try out Egypt when I'm done with my current capagin.
love the turks though they are a bit too easy. you can almost always get an alliance with the byz first turn in the game, pull armies to syria invade tripoli and palestine to corner the egyptian sultan in antioch and get a nice ransom. if you are lucky, you can corner him again by taking sinai but this makes the game a bit too easy in early with two ransoms. The byz military takes 20 years or so to fully develop so taking the big C and holding onto territory is pretty easy.

I'm in the middle of my first muslim campaign using the Egyptians. They are actually doing quite well having destroyed the Turks and cleaned the Almos out of Africa (one or two Spanish provinces remain) and I'm now eyeing up the Byzantines. There are some fun troops and those palestinian naptha throwers frighten the hell out of everyone. The style is very diferent from using the English Poles and Italians.

is it just me? or do those turks just seem to be challenged from the getgo???
challenged? you mean threatened by two big powers?
it just goads you into attacking quickly. Rum and Syria bordering four provinces each makes for some terrific tactical strike opportunities.

Personally i find all muslim countries far 2 weak even in the desert on single an multiplayer. Any player worth there salt should be able to defeat the muslim hoardes.
o ya as for the post, i kinda like the turkish hybrid units, the turks id say r the best out of a bad lot http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smokin.gif
Vexille, I would have to disagree. with the right tactics ie. not catholic hold the line and slug fest, the muslims can really do a number on any force. esp. in the desert.
the turks are probly the best for illustrating the hit and run tactic and thus is one of my favorite factions.
even muslim factions can outslug a catholic faction. have you tried playing with Almos and the AUMs? they can steam roll most catholic battlelines and have barely break a sweat. with the low build reqs, they are decidedly OP and make them one of the toughest factions in single player in early, at least.

I like to play the Almohads because their units can handle the desert and because they can slug it out with the catholic factions.
Also my mom has Andalucian heritage.
I voted Almohads, as I took part in two very fun PBM campaigns with them. In the SP game, they probably have the most limiting unit selection - they have particular difficulty with massed knights and Mongol heavy cav. But it is hard to complain when you have AUM; playing an Almohad AUM-heavy army is almost like playing an Ancient Roman one.
All Muslim factions benefit from arguably the best music in the game - and I enjoyed the victory roll when you finally beat the game with them.

I have to vote for the Turks. I love the fact that they can train so many diverse units. Especially the Jannissaries and AHC.
I also love the fact that they forced me to learn a new set of tactics to maximize the potential of their skirmisher- and archer-heavy forces. My first ever Turkish campaign was a total joke. Later, though, I read a book called 'Culture and Carnage' (a good read, although I only agree with about half of the author's conclusions) that got me to thinking about historic Eastern armies and how they fought. Also, I kept reading the forums and picked up a ton of good advice specific to MTW. I'd been trying to play the Turks like a silly Westerner; now I'm owning the board with them.
My only problem with the Turks now is that you can't rename Constantinople once it's yours http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif
