campmap/startpos then chose one of the txt files early high or late open it with notepad and scroll down untill you see the part that says active factions.
This is the part of the Early, High, and Late files in the campmap/startpos files that you are looking for. This one here is the Early list.
//========================================
//Active Factions
//which factions are to appear in the game
//and which of these factions are playable
//========================================
SetActiveFaction:: FN_ALMOHAD FT_MAJOR
SetActiveFaction:: FN_BYZANTINE FT_MAJOR
SetActiveFaction:: FN_EGYPTIAN FT_MAJOR
SetActiveFaction:: FN_ENGLISH FT_MAJOR
SetActiveFaction:: FN_FRENCH FT_MAJOR
SetActiveFaction:: FN_GERMAN_HRE FT_MAJOR
SetActiveFaction:: FN_ITALIAN FT_MAJOR
SetActiveFaction:: FN_POLISH FT_MAJOR
SetActiveFaction:: FN_SPANISH FT_MAJOR
SetActiveFaction:: FN_TURKISH FT_MAJOR
SetActiveFaction:: FN_DANISH FT_MAJOR
SetActiveFaction:: FN_ARAGONESE FT_MAJOR
SetActiveFaction:: FN_HUNGARIAN FT_MAJOR
SetActiveFaction:: FN_SICILIAN FT_MAJOR
SetActiveFaction:: FN_NOVGOROD FT_MINOR
SetActiveFaction:: FN_PAPIST FT_MINOR
All you have to do is change MINOR to MAJOR.
there must be one step missing still, since I've done that, and the "Papacy" doesn't come up for selection on the faction selection screen.
Get the "All 20" file. Works great http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wave.gif

make sure u saved it, thats the one and only step to get em.
still can't do it (I know I gotta save the wordpad doc)
but you guys are evidently talking about doing this for the multi-player online.
No, I was thinking of doing it for the single-player campaign. Is it still supposed to work for that?
My goal is to play with the Papacy. I realize I won't be able to excommunicate and recommunicate other factions, but I just don't want the whole hassle of being excommunicated myself.
Plus I think it would be funny if the Pope had a bunch of kids.
Am I dreaming, or is there in fact a patch for this?

ya i just went in and changed minor to major and can play the papacy off line.
are u sure ur in the right area? tell us exactly where u are going. also did u edit all 3? early/high/late? maybe u edited one but are trying to play the papacy in a diff. one
no, I got it.
I was doing everything right; it was just necessary to restart the computer for some reason.
my comp --> c --> prog files --> total war --> medieval total war --> campmap --> startpos --> early, etc.
I wasn't in the "loc" folder.

u had to reboot? thats odd. I never had to, hm, well glad you got it to work http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/bigthumb.gif
yeah, had to reboot for some reason.
got it to work, sort of.
can't seem to have babies, even with the .unfreeze. cheat
Am I immortal when I'm the pope, or am I about to die and discover I've wasted my time?
Is the game winnable when you're the Pope?
well, a reboot might have been a bit drastic. In general, when ever you change stuff to the game code, you have to shut the game down completely and start up again. Also, if you change unit, building, province, etc. stats, you often have to start a new game, as none of those kinds of changes get grandfathered in.
But whatever, at least you get to be the Pope.
FYI, the pope doesn't have daughters
I also don't remember whether or not he gets heirs, a new Pope may just spring up when the old one dies. Something else fun might be to mod in the Crusader units, at a heft discount, for the Papal side, at least while you're playing them. It would suck if you decided to play the Italians or Germans some other day, went up against the Pope in Early and faced Hosp. Foot Knights. Eek.
yeah, it's great being the Pope. Whether you die of old age or kill yourself in a battle, a new Pope pops up the next turn (apparently without limimt), and everything proceeds as before.
the one grief I'm now having is that I want to conquer the entire world. Learning how to play as the Pope was an important step because now I don't have to deal with him, but nevertheless, if I conquer the last province (Ireland), then I'll win the game.
Does anybody know a cheat to disable victory and just keep playing? I already know Julian's post-1453 date patch, but even then if you conquer all of Europe the game ends. I want to conquer everything andhave the game continue, ruling over a placid sea of yellow.
Anybody know how I can arrange this?
maybe garauntee a rebellion every year, the game may wait.
