I have very interesting experience with Pope.

Playing with Spanish/Early/Expert, I start conquering as usual I do: Almohads, Egypt, Turks, Byz, in mean time have a ?blitz krieg? with Aragones, so Pope don?t have time to boring me. For that time I have inquisitor, send couple of them to all Pope territories (good thing is that they born with 3 stars) and start annoying him when conquering other west European Christian brotherhood, so was only once excomunicated for a short time, cause Pope die, other one have a problem with Italians. Also manage my diplomacy, etc.

After I take control of all islamic and catholic land, I kick the Pope to paradise, and continue to conquer the rest of the map: East Orthodox Europe and Mongols.

Pope never appears again After that I have some 40-50 moves.

My conclusion:
As usual new Pope is elect by some catholic faction. So I smash them all, was in war with him, so there are no other one to give the man for his throne.
Or I have lucky, or AI bug.

This has happened to me as well, one game as the English I conquered the pope and he didn't return for the rest of my game. guess we were lucky.

Could it be that the Pope's reemergence - like other returns - needs loyalty to be below some threshold in the provinces he can reemerge in (Papal states, rome, venice, I don't remember if there's another one)?
I've always seen him return, so I don't really know, but I never paid close attention to loyalty being 200%, only not too low.

I think the re-emergence is hard-coded. The Papacy can't be eliminated completely. I think lady luck was just working in your favour.

I would say so, the Pope always returns eventually, usually with more troops Sometimes it is good to cripple him, but not kill him and then sue for peace (to lift excommunication).

Loyality doesn't work. In some of my campaigns I had a very low taxation, lot of unit, just in case, and it long for decade or 15 years, and he came back, again with thousands of his strong unit, even he don't have buildings to make them regulary.
