View Full Version : Beat a Frenchman with a Stick...
Does anybody else here get LUDICROUSLY involved with MTW?
I'm not just talking the normal wails of frustration in half life as some retarded mutant with 347.5 legs wastes you for eighth time running in less than a minute, but the paternal feeling you get, looking after your country.
I do. I'm the King of Constantinople The Lord of the Hoard I'm the damn pope if I choose to be
I was playing medieval, late last night when I first became concerned...
I was the Byzantines Emperor. I had taken over Italy, starting in the High era, and had declared my self pope. Low and behold, in the middle of Germany a few years later a slight balding fellow pops up and says Excuse me, he is a fraud. I am the pope.
I can feel my blood pressure rising. Me? A fraud? I the emperor of Byzantine How dare a mortal speak to me so.
So at around one in the morning I was well underway with my ethnic cleansing of Germany. No surrenders. No Mercy. No chance. I took over an entire country which nearly cost me the game because I got insulted by three sentences in a small font, in a colour that was nearly, but not quite, entirely unlike purple.
It does worry me that I become so involved with these characters. Surely, I am over reacting to some degree? But as far as I'm concerned, I have put in quite a bit of effort to becoming pope so perhaps the Germans did deserve it. I don't know...
But when I read my characters vices/virtues, I more often than not play to them. If he is a tactician, my plans are shrewd, if he is a drunk, I play the game like a bull in a china shop.
For all the strangeness, I am glad I play it this way, for becoming a character makes the game more real for me.
What about you lot?

Well, I am an Emglish b@stard by nature, and I often play the english, and take GREAT delight in making my welsh g/f watch me conquer the welsh, and then SHE takes great delight in watching them rebel against my harsh rule...
I don't quite ge to the point of screaming at the screen, but I do shout at other factions, for example when in my latest english campaign the french finally accepted my offers of an alliance when they were down to one province and no real army, only to attack four provinces with crappy troops the next year. Honestly, I felt like beating them over the head with a stick...
You crazy folk you roleplay so easily are evyable because you enjoy the game that much more. I just play to enjoy slaughtering the little sprites with my little sprites hehe. Although, since i am canadian, i have a joke-loathing for the french so i always crush them first...

Yes, sometimes I get quite absorbed... http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/gc-book2.gif
The other night while I was playing the HTW mod there was this rebel province near my borders I choose to remain peaceful with from the start. The rebel leader of this province actually fought off dozens of attacks from southern invaders during the course of the game. One thing lead to another and I had to take his province or risk my only land route to the lower Greek isles becoming cut off by my enemies. I wanted to bribe his army but lacked the funds so the choice was clear that I had to take it by force.(this is where I wish there was more diplomacy options in the game) I figured I would route his men and let him go and hopefully give the province back to them later. Incidently this rebel leader was a 9 star general with plenty of valor amoung his men so I feared a fight to the bitter end. I could have just crushed him with an auto-calc but I saw fitting to bring my king himself (7 star gen with many warrior and leader virtues) for the battle with an evenly matched forced and give him an honorable fight. And a battle to the end it was, our forces locked together for hard with the kills coming slowly as each of his troops were very brave and stubborn. I charged at him with my king and his personal guard and managed to kill the leader in a bloody push up the hillside. His troops werent phased a bit by the death of thier leader and kept fighting strong. They managed to kill all but my king's unit. The thing got me the most was a group of rebel Akondistes that had routed earlier and where no more then a few yards from the edge of the map when they decided to turn back and fight my king's unit They marched all the way back to my king who by then had taken a position on a hillside, for up, and stand for a suicide charge I ran them all done and killed them, I knew if I didnt finish them they would only came back. I felt like general that had to kill Katsumoto at the end of The Last Samurai. After that I lost all taste for war for the rest of the night and went to bed.
I have a replay of it if anyone wants to see it. I think you will need the HTW mod installed to view it.

Isn´t this just what games are all about? I always RP my games according to the way history unfolded itself. I actually try to manage my empire as if it was for real. I just wish that the game would behave more realistic somtimes.

I've been startled more than once by the wife and/or kids they know they just have to walk (not sneak) up to almost beside me, wait a few seconds and then talk´. If I´m in the tactical mode I'll jump at least one foot in the air and yell a profanity http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/gc-furious3.gif
Yes. I get so involved into the game, I lose track of time and space. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smokin.gif
Sometimes I play my game as historically accurate as I can, and sometimes I just take over the Europe.
It's a funny feeling. Sometimes I feel like that little mouse with huge brains: It's time to take over the world
Naturally, all my total domination attempts don't success so well. As an example, nearly always when I find my trustful ally, the Almohads, acting treacherously (like sending assassins after the members of my house) I wage a war over their lands (hey, that sea-empire has to have some use) and after a couple of fights, I've smashed the Almohad faction and bribed it's old armies onto my side.
Naturally, after a couple of moves, there are those Turkish and Egyptians trying to claim my lands and declare those for themselves.
Harsh as is, you everyone surely know that especially the Turkish are set on MUSLIM_EXPANSIONIST and therefore they really don't lack men. So, they're coming wave after wave to invade my ex-Almohad provinces. Unfortunately, they usually success (bummer, those Muslims always help each other, in the case I happen to attack the Turkish, there's always at least one Almohad army after mine).
So, I've noticed that I do far more better if I just stick to the reality http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif .

Where is GAH ?? There can be no poll without Gah In this case I was forced to give a meaningful answer http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/gc-stunned.gif
I like to chronicle my nations history. I keep an accountants notebook and keep track of all the major occurances in my nation from family trees to marriages, alliances, assasinations, floods etc. It's a hoot because then I can go back and read it like a history book (as if I don't do that enough).
I even go so far as to name the wars I fight. It's amazing that some of them (like when I fight the Alhomaads) can last over 75 years.

I got fed up with the poor political dynamics of the game.
You can't negotiate and force your enemies to surrender.
Once you get too big - noone will ally with you.
Once you get too big - the Pope keeps on excommunicating you.
If you recapture your territory and rescue your trapped troops in the castle, the Pope excommunicates you.
When there is a rebellion, the rebel troops aren't just peasant armies - they have damn weird ass combinations like Muslim British longbowmen.
I got fed up with the 3d boardset of the game. It takes forver for me to move my pieces. Sometimes one of them gets lost behind a flag.
I'll think of a few more....
I just play MTW on multiplayer now.
I bought Viking Invasion last year but I haven't played it yet.
I realized that M:TW was more that that stoopid game I play during my free time when:
I kept thinking about strategies while going to work.
I would stare at the campaign map for minutes trying to gauge the effect of my next move to my neighbors and how to counter them if they become hostile.
I sleep peacefuly http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/gc-zzz.gif after a hard fought battle against a superior and worthy enemy, like I did all the marching and sword swinging.
Well, Id say when you make a mod of the game and would work on the mod rather than watching TV/movies or reading or going out.

Well I get into the game most definately. But for me I play during the day when my wife is at work and my kids are at school, so I have the luxury of getting into it. I wouldn't go so far as to say that I roleplay my kings, but I come close to it. I carefully plan out my moves, watching what the computer does and trying to anticipate what they are going to do. This morning I was playing my Novgorod campaign and got a little pissed off. I was repelling wave after wave of the Golden Horde in Livonia and doing very well. My RusSpearmen and Armoured Spearmen ripped the Mongol Heavy cav to shreads. Well I was of course quite content to let the Mongols throw wave after wave against my wall and let them thin themselves out. I was more than a little pissed when on my fourth time defending against the Horde, Poland sent them reinforcments. Man I swore so loudly and gave it a oh no you didn't yell and startled my dogs. Needless to say that I considered it a personal offense and will now wipe out the Poles after I'm finshed with the Horde. That kinda thing happens all the time with me. But what really gets me going is when my supposed ally helps out another Faction against me. When that happens I will then not rest until I have wiped the bloody traitors from the earth
I once had a nightmare about one of my crusades. Playing with English, two of my crusades lost their way on the way to Antioch, so when I slept I saw a dream in which had 10 knights (such a large crusade force) and was looking to a deadend street... asphalt.. no entrance sign... horses... and plate armor... then I understood I should quit.

Oh I really get involved with this game... When i play as a Muslim faction I get so offended that the Pope has the front to call for crusades against me that I send out Assassins (A lot of Popes die at the dinner table)
Those Popes never learn http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif
In addition sometimes I get really mad when I get stabbed in the back by my allies... One such incident was when I sent a massive Crusade heading towards the Almohads in North Africa, on the turn before they were due to arrive in Morrocco the Spanish decided to invade and my massive crusade turned to dust
I was so angry at this trickery that I crossed the border with my King and invaded Spain to teach them a lesson
I take every action against me very personally and get very vengeful when wronged... The rest of the time I am a good and fair king.
I too become quite caught up in the game. Just a few days ago, I was very vexed by the fact that my specialist attacker king died on me and I was left with a two star good for nothing. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/angry.gif I was also the Sicilians and had to fight a two front war with the HRE and the Hungarians (who used to be my allies but apparently had their designs on Venice). http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/gc-wall.gif
I was going broke and my armies were getting thinned out by the fact that they were allied against me finally through a merc rampage, I managed to throw the HRE into a civil war and you cannot image my satisfaction when I trapped and ransomed the HRE king. THe next turn, he offered me his daughter. LOL, now that half of HRE and allied with them, I can destroy the treacherous Hungarians. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/bigthumb.gif

No matter how involved I get I just cant get myself to do an english campaign ever. It just feels wrong like my republican ancestor would spin in their graves. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif
I have to admit that, as an Englishman, I find it extremely satisfying to start an Early/Expert campaign as the English and annihilate the French within the first few turns and take hold of all of France.
Just for the food and wine, you understand http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/cheers.gif

I get involved in this game as much as the next man. Makes it fun that way and you get some crazy dreams. And Rome totalwar seems like a game you can get more involved in.
