My favorite faction is Spanish, yellow fever.

Usually I don?t use any artillery, much more prefer close combat, even on siege. If it?s a long siege, I use cheaper units to break the wall and finish the defenders with my best troops with archer support. One unit of 100 men is more useful than a short-range artillery.

But once I decide to use cannons. I had demi culverins, five of them. Their value was 1.
So I start conquering Hungary and have river bridge map. Hungarians has 1.000 mans more than I had. Even if I had more archers*, I thought I will not cross the bridge easily.

And I decide to train my five units of demi culverins. And after 90 minutes all 2.560 Hungarians was slaughtered and my cannons earned 5 and 6 valor.

Couple of battles later, fighting with Byzantines, which leader was their king with 9 stars with pretty strong army I made order to my 5 cannons to hit their king. After second shot their king was dead, than my cavalry slaughtered everyone.

*
my best unit, yes-simple archers, as someone mention ?vanilla?. I don?t use cheats, and don?t change anything in txt documents, but often like to use no limited ammo. That gives opportunity to AI to have the same archery power on me, and battles are sometimes longer, more interesting and fun.

Comes a bit of late, but still..

Welcome to the Org Crazy Duke http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wave.gif (Guess I wouldn't be supposed to say this until I'm a member instead of a senior patron, but..)

But, aren't those Demi Culverins just lovely? One shot and the enemy king/general lies dead on a field so that maggots can eat his filthy corpse.

I back up your opinion about not usually using the artillery units. Even when besieging, I tend to give those poor enemies a few years to starve and then assault their castle with my brand new reinforcements.
And if I'm in hurry (like an enemy army in a nearby province coming for me), I just assault the castle and give those poor enemies a few volleys and then once they're panicked and gone for good (I'm using Arbalesters), I force the gate open and rumble everything inside the castle-yard.

Of course, this tactic has its drawbacks. Firstly there are those massive losses that you might encounter (as for an example, you simply don't have access to siege-weaponry). It's quite disadvantegeous to assault a castle with ballista towers, catapults and culverins. But, it's a one hell of a satisfaction when you manage to smash that door open. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/gc-wall.gif

I really wish there was a way to limit ammo only in offensive situations. I love playing with no ammo, but I think it's too lame if attacking archers can shoot indefinitely. On defense the archers should shoot forever though. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/tongue.gif Too bad that's probably impossible to mod in.

Welcome to the .org http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wave.gif

I agree, the Spanish are great http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/gc-yes.gif Sure, Lancers can slice through anything head-on...but sooo much simpler to run down a unit while it chases a Jinette.

I love all the gunpowder artillery, especially the Organ Gun...except when I whack my general by mistake http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/gc-stunned.gif
