View Full Version : Taking down buildings in VI

While my gaming experience with M:TW has grown fat and ugly, I've sometimes gone wild and tested out new things that have come into my mind.
Then, since purchasing this VI (marvellous BTW) I've tried to "experience the atmosphere" by doing things that I believe I would have done as a noble "King of the Saxons" or as a harsh "Viking-king from the North".
This includes building up a highly developed Kingdom as the Picts and taking down every possible man, church, well, beast, village and house I/my bad tempered Vikings might encounter.

On the campaign map, this works, but in the intense of a battle my men don't seem to get a successful hit on a hut's wall, they just end up there hacking and slashing empty space and throwing burning torches over the hut, while the hut itself doesn't take any damage (pouring it with arrows will take it down tho, as works the palisade smashing and forcing the gateways open).

So, what's the problem? Have the Celts started to build their huts from steel covered with wood and wool or what?

PS, those more experienced veteran-writers of this forum may find this extremely annoying as they are to answer this same and old question for the, say, millionth of time.

PPS, no, this "bug" (or whatever you call it, lazy men?) doesn't really ruin my gameplay, but I find it strange.

destroying buildings in the battle section has absolutely no effect on buildings destroyed in the campaign section.

buildings that show up destroyed in the campaign section are calculated seperately from the battle, depending on size of forces involved etc. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif

So how do you pillage as Vikings? Getting profit from destroying buildings, as in the manual? Is that just broken? Or is it that after-battle report you mentioned?

Pillage as vikings.

Win the battle and then destroy the buildings on the campaign map. Watch the florins rollin for that.

But doesn't the manual say that destroying buildings on the campaign map only yields "half the amount" as when you destroy the buildings on the (I thought) battle map?

Nope. The Vikings as a faction get the complete money out it took to construct a specific building when they destroy it. It doesn't matter whether they are destroyed/downgraded automatically or manually by yourself. What you do to the village in battle has no bearing on the stratmap. You won't get money for destroying huts there.

So, now you know it has no effect, but I can understand it if you want to roleplay a bit.

The reason the men don't affect these buildings is because they can only hurt them with their torches, so when they miss, there is no damage.

True. But you didn't pay for them.

one question on this:

when entering a province and besieging the castle, en after some years ending the Siege, what is then best:

large force or a small one? I like to keep the buildings intact and get some high pillaging money. Or how does it work?

See this topic (http://pub133.ezboard.com/fshoguntotalwarfrm5.showMessage?topicID=12102.topic) over at the totalwar.com boards. Basically, there's no way to keep buildings intact and get high pillage money. Damaged/destroyed buildings is where the money comes from.

This is how it works:
Sword pillaging takes a long time and the only building I found that they actually can pillage on the battlemap is the church. I always use archers, 4-6 of them. They´ll tear down a hut in one blast and a church in 5. When on a castle map they´ll tear down the gate in 5 blasts. I always raise the whole town, every building and the fort/ warrior hold when playing the Vikings.
The more raised buildings the more gained florins but it´s not necessary to raise everything, just one of each kind of structure to get a florin-boost. I found this out by playing a battle/ siege not destroying anything and got 1-2000 fl. Then I hit replay and destroyed everything and my pillage income went up to 3-5000 fl. I did this over and over again so I know this works. Happy pillaging

thnx for the help.

what I also would like to know is when you don't manually end the siege, and wait a few years to end the siege on the strategic map. Does it matten how you do this?
with a small besieging force or a large one? --> difference in pillaging money?

It could matter if the castle gets downgraded, which is random. But in general terms, it should make no meaningful difference, money-wise.
