View Full Version : Can either of these accurate for this time period?
I have two maps that I'm wondering are useful for the mod I'm making. The mod is on the Scottish rebellion with Wallace in it. I don't know much about Scotland so I wondered if either of these maps could be applied to the mod.
You''ll probably have to paste the addy into the explorer bar to see the pic.

Links don't work for me either. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/frown.gif
Are you trying to divide Scotland up into its traditional Medieval regions, or into all the actual earldoms/lordships that existed during that period?
Did you copy and paste the address into the explorer bar?
I'll go for whatever is the most accurate.

i know becuase stirlingshire where i live is in both maps.
back then the "territories" were very different.

the links don't work if you copy and paste. just right click save as, and it'll download for ya. they did for me.
those are just counties of scotland today, wallace was in the late 13th century so look for maps that reflect that age better, i think. look on the national library of scotland website, there are loads of maps there.

I'd say neither of those is accurate for the 12th-13th c.
Here's a decent one (c. 1300): http://www.lib.utexas.edu/maps....300.jpg (http://www.lib.utexas.edu/maps/historical/shepherd/british_isles_1300.jpg)
Another: http://vrcoll.fa.pitt.edu/medart/image/England/maps/Br1485.jpg
Ecclesiastical Map (which really helps if you're trying to decide which counties can be combined with others; a good place to start is which dioceses included which counties): http://vrcoll.fa.pitt.edu/medart/image/England/maps/se097eng.jpg
Only thing I see is Caithness & Sutherland are lumped in with Ross & Moray. I'm not sure that the Earls of Orkney still held Caithness & Sutherland in 1300, but if I had to guess, I'd say grouping Caithness with Sutherland and Moray with Ross makes more sense?
The oldest one I could get from that site from 1530ish and just look at this thing.

Now really I couldn't possibly use this monstrosity of a map in the mod. But I appreciate the info, Highland X.
Even if I could find one with some nice borders on it (rather than just the mountains) I could just colour code it onto the VI map.
Thank you so much, Plantagenet I would kiss you if I thought I could stop.
THANK YOU

Looking at them again, I'd say if they're going to separate Berwick, Roxburgh, etc. from Lothian, they should definitely have a separate Moray & Ross?
It would be easier to divide it into traditional "medieval" regions (that sort of match the dioceses) like (if any Scots or other Brits can help here, feel free to add/correct me):
-Lothian (with Berwick, Roxburgh, Selkirk, etc.)
-Galloway (with Dumfries, Wigtown, etc.)
-Argyll (and Lordship of the Isles?)
-Buchan (Aberdeen & Banff)
-Moray (with Elgin & Nairn)
-Ross
-Caithness & Sutherland (with Orkneys?)
-Angus/Forfar with KIncardine
-Perth/Stirling/Fife?
-Strathclyde/Ayr?
Or start with the 7 original Mormaerships/Earldoms and then add Lothian and other areas outside them?
