View Full Version : Ile de France and Foot Knights
Hello everyone - a great site for a great game.
I have a potentially stupid question but I'm quite frustrated and can't see a solution.
On the map, it reads that the region of Ile de France can produce Chivalric Foot Knights at +1 Valor. However, for some reason (presumably no open pastures or my game cd is faulty) I am not offered a Horse Farmer in the Ile de France. Without which, of course, I can produce no Chivalric Knights - which, of course, also means I can't dismount those non-existent Knights to get my long-sought after Chivalric Foot Knights. Now I know I can get Chivalric Knights down in Toulouse for +1 so it's not really the availability of the unit I'm concerned about. My real question is: what sense does +1 to Chivalric Foot Knights have in a province without a Horse Farmer?
Is this a glitch, a bug, an error, or am I being in some way completely obtuse?

- Horse farmer requires a level-1 farm (20% improved farmland).
- IIRC, the +1 valor for chivalric foot knights in Ile De France is meaningless since you can't actually build CFKs in the game. You only get them by dismounting regular chivalric knights.

Welcome to The Org Boulis
whats even crappier about CFKs done in the Ills where your supposed to get +1 valor on them, they are 0 valor just like any other CFK made anywhere else.
Same goes for Hospitallier Foot Knights in Rhodes too btw.

Well, the Chivalric Footknights aren't buildable in an unmodded game, thus you won't get any +1 valour bonus. The bonus given in Ile de France only applies to footknights being trained, not the mounted versions, those are two different units. And yes, a Horse Breeder requires a 20% farmland upgrade first.
However, you can get your +1 footknights by dismounting the Chivalric Knights you've built in Toulouse in battle or modding the game. If you want to do the latter, search for topics have to do it in the Dungeon forum and never forget to back up your files before you change anything
Thanks everyone for the helpful and prompt replies. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/cheers.gif
I suppose there was some stupidity on my part to miss that little old arrow leading from the farm imporovement to the horse farmer...ugh.

It's strange that they would devote a province (or two, in the case of Rhodes) to non-existent units (unmodded of course). For me it's irrelevant since I can get my knights in Toulouse but it sure does seem somewhat useless.
Again, thank you all for responding so quickly http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/bigthumb.gif
I also wanted to say thank you to motorhead and ichi for the nice welcome and yet another round of thanks to Brutal and everyone else for the prompt and informative replies.
You know, I had an idea: what if the +1 valor bonus can be applied not to CFK units that are built there but CFK units that are retrained there? Since I am rather new at the game, I don't know if dismounted CK's after a battle STAY dismounted, but if they do, then why not simply take them up to Ile de France and retrain them for (I presume) an extra +1 valor? Just a thought...
Has anybody ever tried this experiment? It would mean that the combination of Ile de France and Toulouse (with a minor skirmish in between) could immediately hand you +2 valor CFK's.

Welcome, Boulis
While I'm not an expert on valour and retraining (See Ichi's most recent post, in part a response to a question of mine) I do know that your knights hop back on their horses after a dismounted battle.
After all, I'd hate to see the Crusade's finest hitch-hiking back home. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/bigthumb.gif

Yeah, well I wrote about half the replies in both posts, so it would be stupid not to post the links.
But thanks for the kudos, I'm starting to feel usefull again.

Thank you motorhead and cutepuppy those links answered all my questions
I now know what the +1 CFK bonus in Ile de France is for --(well the links and some experimental gameplay helped).
Essentially, I was clued in when I finished training my first group of CK's in Ile de France and noticed that while they were IN the citadel their valor was 1, but when I removed them their valor reverted to 0. Obviously, units in castles are not mounted (so they count as CFK's, hence that is why they show 1 valor in the citadel), so common sense dictates that they revert to valor 1 if they're dismounted before a battle; if they remain mounted they remain at 0 valor. I tested it in battle and it was true It's easy to know which is which before a battle (whether the CK's are from Ile de France or Toulouse) in my campaign because those are the only provinces I use to build CK's: those with 1 are from Toulouse, the rest are Parisians...
So, problem solved. Unfortunately, just as I was going to lower the mailed fist on the Almohads (who attacked me without provocation - I was busy burning the HRE at the stake when they jumped me) my game crashed -- and this twice in exactly the same year http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/angry.gif
Looks like all that effort of building my heavies goes to waste... http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/mecry.gif
Hope it's not a faulty cd... http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/frown.gif
Anyway, thanks again everyone for the fantastic help and the hearty welcome
