Hello all, I'm new and only just got to be a senior patronising person, so have immediately raced over here because I REALLY want to start a PBEM campaign of my own, but am a little unsure of the logistics of it.

How do you actually transfer the save game between people? I see them all referring to uploading to the org and downloading again, how does that work?

Do we all have to have the exact same version? I've seen alot of people's kings still dying at 56, when with viking expansion this no longer happens to me in SP. How does this affect the save games, as I found my old none-viking ones to be useless with the expansion.

How does posting screen shots of battles work? I assume you do a screen capture to get them in the first place, but I'm unsure of how to bung them in with a post.

Can people with mods still play? I have none, but it seems lots of people have one or two at least, and I don't know if save games are transferable.

Are there any set rules, other than those set by the initiator of the PBEM campaign?

I like the kings lifetime each way of playing, but can it be changed to a set amount of years to ensure certain people get a certain event, or those who succeed the throne at a late age get a chance to play more than a few years.

Do many of these actually go all the way through to the end, or to total domination? If no thats fine, but I've not seen many that have made it all the way.

Is there anything else I should know? For reference I am an avid SP player, and while I could Multi I rarely do. I'm running medieval, and patched it before getting viking, maybe thats why the 56yr old bug doesn;t affect me, but I have viking expansion installed and run off that disk.

Hi there, Welcome to the Throne Room.

I shall attempt to answer your questions.

First up PBEM's started off having email addresses submitted by users in the thread and a list is typically created by the host, who would then manage the campaign and forward the game on to the participants.

Each player takes the turn of one King and when their king dies the campaign moves on to the next one.

However recently the Org's main website has had a PBEM Uploader and filespace added to ease the transfer of games. You can upload the savegame in .ZIP or .RAR format and there should also be a link to browse the filespace on the upload page.

The PBEM Host tends to set the rules for a campaign, some campaigns (Such as the Italy and French GA PBEMs) have these rules in place to prevent excessive expansion to keep the campaign going longer... After all everyone tries to do as much as they can during their reign as possible and that has been known to make campaigns end prematurely (especially the TD ones)

I am not sure about how MODs can effect the savegames as I do not MOD myself. But I think someone around here is bound to know.

Most players tend to run the latest version in Campaigns unless otherwise specified. The Latest version is MTW with VI and the VI Patch installed. (V2.01) You can check your version number in the corner of the main menu screen in game.

Welcome to the PB(E)M section of the ORG Sociopsychoactive . It seems that Emperor has answered most of your questions http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/gc-smile.gif so I will just give you a recommendation.

Try participating in a few PBMs first, this will give you invaluable experience as to how things are managed, how writeups are posted, what makes PBMs so good etc etc etc. Before I ran my first PBM I participated in 3 (or is it 4???) campaigns and it gave me a good understanding of what is necessary to run a campaign. I am not trying to put a damper on you, quite the opposite, I am glad that there are new players who express such zeal towards running a campaign. But once again, perhaps you should participate in a couple of them to learn stuff.

Just what will your participation in a campaign teach you? Well, it will help you understand how the transfer of savegames works, that everybody has to have the same version of MTW/VI, how to post writeups/screenshots and much much more.

Ahem.....well enjoy your stay at teh ORG http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wave.gif

The link to the PBM uploader can be found in Does anybody need anything doing? (http://www.totalwar.org/cgi-bin/forum/ikonboard.cgi?act=ST;f=25;t=10630)

or just click here: PBM uploader (http://www.totalwar.org/Downloads/Uploaders/pbmupload.php)

The saved campaign will be sent to the org, were the moderators will put it on this site: Available campaigns (http://www.totalwar.org/patrons/pbm/)
The delay between the uploading and the campaign being added to the list depends on the time the moderators have availible, but will probably happen within twenty four hours.

What about the kings dying at 56yrs old bug? I found with viking and patch it was no more, my last king pived to the ripe olf age of 83 (and I was glad of it too, he was a great king).

Almost all the campaigns I have read show the king dying at 56 still, are you all playing none-viking, or am I just confused?

It means that those campaigns were started before the Viking patch was out.The newer campaigns (French, Italy) dont have the bug happenning.

Hope this answers your question.
