View Full Version : Unit comparison Tool from clan berserk
I downloaded the unit comparasion tool from clan berserk and was looking through the various units and realized when i hit the valour plus button, their stats were going up. Is this correct? If so, would this mean you're peasants could equal your feudal sargeants if their valor was high enough?
Yes one valor increase gives a unit +1 attack, +1 defense and +2 morale. You can pump up a weak unit to become as strong as some of the elite units.

not peasants though :).
Valour is the most important upgrade, mainly because of the +2 morale which means your men wont rout as fast .

I guess theres a reason why my feudal sargeants got wasted by some spearmen on the expert mode, considering the AI gets a +4 valor bonus. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/confused.gif

remember that valour&morale arent the same, IIRC they get a +4 morale bonus.
If they get a +4 valour ,they have +8 morale,+4 attack and +4 defence...
Oh so its morale bonus and not valour bonus? i see... in that case my feudal sargeants got wasted cuz i... sucked.

Yes AI level is only morale added in battles not attack or defense.

Wow, that tool has it all (except the complexity of campaign and battle, you know, that chaos of topology and maneuver in which brilliance, or at least the illusion thereof, can shine bright)
Great piece of work, simply.
However, in addition to this comprehensive statistics and simulated matching of units ceteris paribus, one also has to take into account the cost of units. In campaign games, the real cost (alternative cost as the economists call it) should not be confused with the florine cost. The real COST depends on faction, era and existing buildings. In short, one should of course always build the unit which best matches the units it is likely to meet, given the units POSSIBLE to build.
Things are actually quite complicated, to be sure
In custom battles, one also has to account to the strange fact that the expense of units increase linearely after the fourth one. The slope of this increase is different for different units, varying from 5 to 35 and maybe more. I.e. the fifth unit might costs 35 more than the fourth. The sixth unit costs 70 more than the fourth, and so on.
Diversity has not only the advantage of giving the brilliant commander a wider range of options with which to express his creativity, there is also a very tangible ecconomic advantage.
For each unit after the fourth you add 20% of its cost. So 5th units cost 120%, 6th 140% etc

I can't comment on the strat map.
On the battle map, the a.i. gets progressively better up to hard level. On expert level, the only behaviour difference I can think of, is that it gets a bit more leeway to camp near the map edge if a suitable position is available.
The combat strength of the a.i. units is affected by the difficulty level.
On easy its combat effectiveness is reduced by 30-40% (can't remember the exact figure).
On hard it's increased by 10-15%, and on experct its 30%. 30% being around 75% of the increase you'd get from 1 valour upgrade.
Additionally it gets +4 morale on expert, and the player gets +4 on easy.
gah my memory was rotten then sorry http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/rolleyes.gif
I do remember that post now. What I couldnt figure out was how units could get an increase in combat power of 10-15% and 30. One combat point (attack/defense) will increase it by 20% and 2 points by 44% (formula is 1.2^x) but maybe thats hardcoded into the difficulty levels..

Also bear in mind that some units build valour faster than others, hence some units which look slightly inferior will easily overtake more expensive units as long as some care is taken of them.
Buying lots of copies of the latest unit you can produce is the poorest way to play the campaign game in my opinion. Personally I find I get attached to units which I have built up to high valour, though these are very rarely Gothic Knights or suchlike...
Clan Berserk site seems to be dead, and I can't find this tool from anywhere else. Can someone give it to me puhhleaze? :)
How big is it? I think files <1MB can be just attached to the post, so others can DL it too?
