View Full Version : JDDse One for the books...
You guys have to try playing the rebels in JDDse. I recommend starting and playing another clan until relative security/wealth is attained then send the Daimyo on a suicide mission into a rebel province. Make sure you're training shinobi, ninjas, geishas during that turn, as you won't be able to produce any as the rebels.
Playing as the rebels in JDDse is a study in the unexpected. The "rock, paper, scissors" approach to dealing with various troop is a coin toss in every engagement.
For example:
After bottling up the Mongols in their last province, I went after Hojo. In one particular province, the AI had built about a million YC, no armor, one weapon upgrade, honor zero. I took in 1 CA, 2 MU, and the rest YS. All my troops were fully upgraded honor 3 and up. This one should be a no brainer right? YC on a stick for even a half competent player.
I lost the engagement...
These YC would, in most cases charge headlong into YS holding formation and utterly decimate them. In one case, a group of h3 YS took the charge, whilst another struck the rear flank. The horses ran, but not before ruining both units. Imagine that! rookie YC whipping the tar out of elite YS!
The really weird thing is the consistency, of the inconsistency. In the same battle another group of YS took a headlong YC charge with the results we'd all expect.
There are many surprises for those playing the rebels. I highly recommend trying this for those of you accustomed to winning all the time. Play in the expert mode, it's a scream.
Have fun.
Doesn't that mean that you are playing with the full strength of a clan AND the ronins? For me, it seems that you are making the campaign easier.
No. Let's say you're playing Takeda. You'd send in your Daimyo alone to attack a strong rebel province and make sure he has no way to retreat. Ideally send him via port and destroy the port. When you're through, type in .conan. and end the turn. You'll be able to destroy the Daimyo and inherit all his lands. This will work with any clan but Hojo.
You'll need the vanquished clan's upgraded dojos, because it's pretty nigh impossible to stop Hojo without them, especially in light of the now unpredictable nature of battle.
Like I say, the weirdness happens randomly. Troops routing through your guys may either cause mayhem on the way, or be slaughtered by your fellows holding position. A high honor fully upgraded YS group may or may not win a skirmish with an honor 0 YC with no bonuses. Most of the fellows I had trampled by enemy cavalry, were trained in legendary dojos in Yamashiro and outfitted with the best weapons & armor. You can't imagine my surprise to see that. Give it a shot, you'll love it, but be prepared to get pissed in a few circumstances...
This might be OT but here goes.
I am thinking about modifying JDDse a bit further for my own pleasure.
One thought is:
Since YA can't be produced from any dojos in Mongol campaign, one can modify this unit to give it special attributes. (for instance, make these YA kensai with Yari bunus, but change Kensai to elite no-dachi)
One can give the Japanese clans some of these beefed YA to help them stay alive. But once those original YAs are gone, they are gone forever.

LOL! Kensai Ashigaru! I'd be happy to beef up JHC to say MHC stats. To balance that I'd give them a 3 or 4 to defend. Do you know how to do that?
Oh and I finally finished JDDse with the Ronin. My only tip, use nothing but archers as HTH are worthless in most cases regardless of honor or upgrades. In my last battle I had a (56)CA on a hill in Kaga who opened up on another group of (60)CA that had inexplicably formed a wedge to shoot at another group of my guys. My first volley when they came in range took down all but 7 of them! The first volley! It's crazy I tells ya! I wonder why rebels have such fantastic missle stats and sucky HTH in these mods?
One can fiddle with troopstats.txt, projectile.txt and use the campaign editor from our sword dojo. But you probably are already doing that.

I don't recall Barocca mentioning fiddling with the unit stats. I'll see if I can get him to comment on that. Stay tuned.

Maybe I didn't make myself clear. I was just saying that people could do those things to "customize" the game for their own pleasure.
As to the deadly ronin archer phenomena, it has been verified by many forum members and now considered a known fact. Maybe it's hard-coded in the game engine.
Gothmog is correct, i didn't alter any unit stats for the scenarios,
One odd thing i did notice in battles vs. mongol when i was playtesting the JDDse campaign is what happens if you split your army into 2 approximately equal halves,
(both halves should have 2 muskets)
Have one half sit in a good defensive position and manouever the other half around the edge of the map trying to get well behind the mongols.
Make sure your defensive half is visible,
the mongol will almost always split his own forces, keeping some facing your defenders, and moving some into the path of your 'wanderers' - but then he seems to 'stall' - he can't make out which section he should attack, he'll often swap units back and foirth between his two groups, and may make a few half hearted attempts at assaulting you, i have run muskets completely out of ammo peppering mongol units from behind and in front, watching them route, and then dishing out the same to 'fresh' units appearing on the battlefield.
doesn't always work, but when it does it is fun.
as for beefing up Ashi's, if they are defending in trees, with a high honour unit, or even your Daimyo, protecting their backs they will stick around for a very long time.
But by all means, beef them up, after all they can't be replaced, once they are gone, they're gone...
I am glad people are still enjoying the JDD campaigns, I had a lot of fun making them, and SE is my favourite.

Gothmog or Barrocca,
Sorry for being somewhat clueless but I've never done a troop mod. Do I go into explorer and seek out troopstats & projectile.txt or where? I've never used the campaign editor either...
Barrocca, what's your theory for the massive HTH penalty the ronins in JDD suffer?
Barrocca, It is sure fun using that tactic (if it works). Watching the Mongolian troops move back and forward between the two groups and get slaughtered by the Musk. One battle in Ibana, I managed to push almost 2000 Mongolian troops back to the sea using 2 groups of 3 Musk, 1 ND and 4 YS and YA. The Musk always has the highest kill count (record is at 306). Only in JDD that I found the Mongol Horde become inferior force to me.
Moriboy san:
You can find troopstats.txt and projectile.txt from you WE folder (whereever you installed WE/MI).
Most of the stats in both files are self-explaintory. There are other posts that elaborated those files in detail.
If you are really into mod, go to the mod forum and you will find more help there.
Well, that's not really surprising, as in JDDse all Japanese clans are armed to the teeth.
