http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wave.gif hi everybody I have had medieval for not very long and I was wondering should I get Shogun as well for £9.99 it seems a great price and i have heard a lot of good stuff about it but i want to know what the shogun community thinks http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/bigthumb.gif http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/bigthumb.gif http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/bigthumb.gif http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/bigthumb.gif

Just below the white box where you type your reply is a link called 'emoticons' click on that and a card will load with a full list.

I'll spare you my full and lengthy opinion on Shogun verses medieval, instead I'll sum it up: shogun is miles ahead in atmosphere and I prefer the concentrated structure of the game. MTW has too many units, too many provinces, just too much everything and it loses that focus that makes Shogun a sharper game to me. MTW also lacks the atmosphere, it has no throne room, no seasons, the tiny detail is gone. Both excellent games and well worth playing. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/ht_bow.gif

I second everything Frogbeastegg said. MTW might be more sophisticated in terms of battle mechanics and economical model, but STW was more balanced and had the beautiful atmosphere that MTW lacks.

It is very cheap now, so you can't go wrong in buying it. The only bad thing is that today is the last the Shogun MP server is on line.

I don't know - it's hard to go back to STW after MTW. I have never done so. The main problem for me is that the strategic map and choices are much less interesting. It is basically fairly unremitting warfare and so less suitable for the kind of role-playing, glorious achievements type game I prefer. There is also a big issue of balance summed up by the "Hojo horde" - the faction with the Hojo lands can overwhelm all others. Some folk don't like the power of geishas (uber assassins) but I have never persisted long enough to find out about them.

The battles are quite comparable, although I believe the MTW AI is a little better (in STW it was more common to kill off large factions by killing their leader in battle).

However, it depends partly on how interested you are in the setting. I prefer Europe in the Middle Ages, but if I were a feudal Japan buff, I may prefer STW. In your position, having never played STW, I would recommend you try it for variety's sake but not expect it to outshine MTW.

All that said, Frogbeastegg is right in that STW is better than MTW in some respects I actually prefer the sprites for the soldiers in battle and their battle animations. The cut-scenes, voice-work, atmosphere and chrome are much better. MTW was a little sloppy here (eg why European units should shout "Hi" when you take them out of a garrison on the strategic map, I don't know).

Last tip - if buying Shogun, get the one with the Mongol Invasion added in. The MI campaign is no great shakes, but it includes a number of variants of the main campaign (akin to early, middle and late MTW campaigns) that greatly add to replayability.

Hi

ShogunTW/WE is still a good bargain at around £5.
This was the latest release.

When MTW came along the Shogun community disappeared. After three months in a near empty lobby, it was obvious that MI, as an online game, had had its day. I used to regularly play 4v4, on 56k, with little or no lag. I went back a few times but even with adsl the lag is just a pain.

Single play, Shogun is a much better game.

Barocca's STW for VI Mod is probably better than both.

I think you should get it. It's a great game, but on a technical level MTW is better.

However, in polish and atmosphere (movies, ambience, sky, and more) STW is better.

Still, I find MTW more engaging. STW is still worth buying, espeically for 9,99. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/gc-thumbsup.gif

It will be £4.99 well spent

MTW can sometimes just be overwhelmng but Shogun is manageable, lets you fight a whole range of great battles with controllable forces and has great atmosphere and satisfaction ratings.

The loss of multiplayer is a blow but the solo game is just about as near a perfect wargame experience for the PC as you can get.

I agree with everything frogbeatsegg said and more. this game has spirit. the music is absolutely beautiful as well. whether it be the nice serene relaxing music of the campaignmap to the lively warlike samurai music. there arent as many units but these units are a helluva lot more fun than any of that shit in MTW. ever heard of a Kensai boy? If you liked the Golden Horde, then this game is for you The Mongols get thier own really unique fun as hell array of units plus thier own MOVIES and MUSIC. believe me the Horde really is terrifying watching hundreds of Mongol warriors charge down from a hill deep into the midst of a foggy plain filled with a legion of courageous samurai and the tension music ACTUALLY builds up tension. especially the samurai version. there are ots of very high quality movies to show ninja assassinations of which there are over 10. I could go on and on but I'll spare you that. Buy this game m8. You wont regret it. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/cheers.gif

i dont know what pounds convert to in canadian dollars, but i got my stw game after mtw, and play it whenever i am in the mood for a bit of a less complicated (in some ways) game, while certian aspects of shogun are rusty compared to medieval, you really cant go wrong if you are looking for a strategy game to keep you sane until rtw comes out http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/gc-confused.gif http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/gc-dizzy.gif

I definitely support buying it. It's the simplicity and purity of the first game that makes it quick and easy fun. It's just a shame you won't find many people playing it online - although the ones that do are a good bunch.

Both are great but i like Shogun much more for its simplicity, in-game movies, great atmosphere, throne room, cool units and above all for me japanese arrangement is more interesting than medieval europe ...
