What happens to active crusades....

If there are some crusades on their way to my provence...or any provence really, and the pope is eliminated before the crusaders take the provence they are after, what happens to the crusaders?

Can they finish their crusade or does it disband?

Also if you get excomed, in the middle of one, can you finish or will it disband?

I can only answer the second question in relation to the AI and that I've encountered France still with crusades running after they were excommunicated. Seems a bit weird, I mean if you are considered unholy, how you fight in God's name but maybe money talks in this case

Well, lets just say that the crusaders, with the absence of any radios havent heard yet...

Of course, once they figure it out, they'll be mighty upset, but in possession of the holy land..

I can confirm on the second question, the crusade continues even when the crusader, my own faction in my case, is excommed. i should have an answer on the first question shortly, i have an HRE crusade ongoing and the pope is on his last leg against the sicilians

AFAIK

1 - If the crusade has already started it will continue to the bitter end even if the Pope is eliminated.

2 - Crusades also continue as normal even if the faction is excommed. THis is not that unusual - one of the German Emperors Fredrick II (?), not Barbarossa a later one actuually fought/purchased back Jerusalem from the Egyptians while he was excommed The pope wasnt too pleased

I know it is possible to lose a crusade somehow because it happened to me once.

I got a message saying "without the support of the Pope, your crusade has disbanded" or something to that effect. I just can't remember how it happened.
