Playing in med mod I beleive that the Scilians have the best units avaliable in comparsion to any other faction. Access to almost all of the italian infantry especially theirs spear units, Scilian knights and fuatawas (I like archers who can still charge in and make a difference when the melee side is slacking.) which make a nice balance side.

Main difficulty is expanding at the begining which is a course of building naval ships and following political currents. In my latest game it was a matter of following the italians and spanish into war against the Almos. Letting the spanish and italians take the bulk of their armies. I succestfully lead the Scilian armies into Northen africa and proceeded al the way to spain. Then in good christian sprit I sacked the the rest of Spain before they could recuprate and killed the spanish KIng. Spain, Africa and sciliy... Naval power... Italian Spears... Scilian Knights...what more could you want.

How many homelands does Sicily have?

So far I found Spain to be the best. You can eventually set up trade networks on both oceans. This is great because at some point one will be attacked but you'll still have the other to help keep the florins flowing.

Spain also has a lot of iron and a good mix of units.

I haven't tried Sicily though .....

Besides the HRE, one of the most challenging has been Byzantium in the high era.

Russia also have awesome and cheap units.
Poland become easier with discount and valor bonus in most of your main unit. Polish militia: main infantry, Retainer: main cavalry. You will have a discount army

I've got to go with the Byzantines hands down. Ultra elite units for all eras...with low requirements....no one stands a chance.

I would agree with you in the early era but I found the high era to be a challenge. The units you get are great but your provinces are all spread out so it's difficult to concentrate on the Turks, for example, without leaving Greece or Crimea vulnerable. If you've been successful, I would love to hear about it.
