When stationing troops in a province purely for the defence of it, is there a difference the AI picks up on whether your untis are in the castle or not?

Will the AI invade a province with 500 men outside a castle but not with 500 men in it?

Thanks.

There is no difference. They will all come out to play when an enemy enters the province.

The only time it can have an effect is if you place a king who has a Virtue (or Vice) as a defender in the castle just when an heir is about to come of age... The heir's rank is determined by his father's and some fluctuation.

IIRC somewhere in the Shogun archive it was mentioned that the AI doesn't see troops garrisoned inside a castle as a threat. This was useful when trying to convince paranoid daimyo's that you really wanted peace, or to prevent massive troop build-up. I do not know whether it still applies to MTW.

Hm... didn't know that. Could be it still applied, that would be interesting.
