View Full Version : Russias new found strenght
Well if you play medieval totalwar viking invasion on multiplayer, you might of noticed that alot more players are playing as the russians.
Maybe some of you guyes want to play russian too here's why:
New cav: Lithuanian Cavalry very useful
Boyars: Super cav archers good in range an cc
I think they are actually better now
Armoured Spearmen: Another decent unit to put in your ranks just don't let them be overwhelmed or they will run
Here's what I usally play with Russian wise 10000 High age
3 Boyars some valor
4 Lith Cavalry some valor
3 A. Spear some valor
3 Halbridiers some valor
3 pavise xbowmen
this is a good army
Play as the russians more

Yea the Russians get good troops mostly range cavalry which destory the other army with tons of arrows and can fight well in flanking. But the big problem with being Russian is that when the horde comes they'll be all over you.

The problem is that the Russians don't have a good/strong infantry. Armored spear men is a decent unit, but that's only in early, in latter ages, they will get creamed.

Russian army is an eastern army so its more cavalry focused, infantry is less important on the vast steppes. To travel across these lands, one needs a horse, so warriors on horses are more practical. I like Russians for they cavalry: Boyars, Druzhinas, HA, Heavy Steppies, Mounted X-bows. This is just a different type of warfare compared to catholic factions. The difference doesnt mean Russian forces are weaker, they are just different, and of course very effective.

Boyars are class and the Horde isnt all it is made out to be either you can easy defeat them. I going to start a new campaign this weekend with them again but this time I going to leave the horde use them to occupy someone else heh heh.
You could always dismount the Druhzina and use them with a mix of Armoured/Rus Spearmen for an ok infantry mix.

Hi everybody
I thought it worth to mod a few things about russians:
1. Russian spears are excellent or at least better than other spears. I modded their availability from Early to all ages but cut off the other spear units. For the Russians its RussSpear and nothing else.
2. Lithuanian Cav are restricted to early but need a Fortress and whatnot http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/gc-jester.gif This is ridiculous Compare their stats to other Cav and their requirements and then change it.
3. Druzhina Cav. I decided to give them 1+ Att/1+ Def against Horses. I consider them to be well trained Horse units, experts in Horse battle so to say. As you are quite short on spears and other anti-cav this gives you a little more chance against the Horde and suits my picture of the Russians as Cavalry-Faction.
With Steppe Heavy, Druzhina, Lithuanian Cav and of course Boyars you can field quite a mobile and powerful army.
Cheers

I would recommend you try out 4 militia sergeants instead of the spears and one of the Halbs. Also, I usually take 4 Boyars. If I'm going to take 4 cavs at all, any 4 cavs or more, I make sure that I always have 4 Boyars. They're the best cavs the Russians have. Lith cavs are okay, but they're not nearly as good as Boyars imo.
Opps I almost forgot, in MP early era, they also have Vikings. IMO they are one of the strongest factions in early, as they can field 8 good inf, and strong cavs.

Lith cav is one of the worst units of MTW. I'd never take them for any MP army. Better take some Mounted Sarges. Halberdiers are a viable option at higher florin levels, at 10k you can't pump them up enough and they'll run quickly especially when you face a skilled opponent. Take Handgunners in Late, MS in High.
Heres why i play russians in late:
8 boyars
8 arqubiusers
This is a great army if it doesnt rain :)
