I'm playing as the Hungarians right now, and something new happened. The Byzantines royal family died out 20 or 30 years earlier, and I'd been going through with Emissaries buying up the newly rebel armies (no point in letting them go to waste, I say).

I noticed a few very large stacks of rebel armies in central Turkey, but didn't pay them much mind.

Until, that is, I bribe Trebizond and add it to my empire. The next turn, three thousand rebels march in from those two central territories, and send me packing.

I'd never seen it before, has anyone else had experience with very assertive rebels?

I have had rebel armies charging about in the Viking campaign (armies brought about due to my strategy of hunting down the leaders of all AI factions simultaneously with vast swarms of armoured, axe-wielding psychopaths with beards. Every now and then a rebel army would try and take one of the provinces I'd decided to hold on to. Very annoying really - meant I had to have... two, sometimes even three units as garrison.

Pacification wasn't really my issue at the time, so I suppose large-scale civil unrest would have been problematic.

Normally, I expand my empires slowly, with a very solid outer line of provinces - then no invading armies are an issue, rebel or otherwise.

The uppity rebs may still be thinking like Byzantines.

Trebizond is a home territory, and valuable for archers too.

If you had a small garrison, or they interpreted your bribery as an act of war they may have struck.

But yes, rebs do get aggressive. Just less often than most major powers are only when a great opportunity comes along.

pin them down and then smash all the stacks at once. You'll be swimming in gold.

Sad for the troops, but not a total waste considering the liquid assets you'll acquire.

I've definately been jumped by rebels like this, happened just the other day after the Hungarian dynasty died out. Borders with rebs are not secure; just rather more secure than borders with an active faction.

yes...rarely some overconfident yet manymany rebels come my way, kinda like having a blue moon though, rebels arent nearly as aggressive as i'd like them to be, i wouldnt mind fending off the rebelrousers as well as those other pesky factions...the more the merrier, or the more bloodshed, something like that... http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/gc-argue.gif http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smokin.gif
