I took out the french in ONE battle.. a 4000 or more army on both sides. now 25 years later, the english ( me ) are in a deeep hole. 15 stacks of spainish on my border ready to attack me. the germans falling to the bys witch have most of europe. i have a qustion.. how the hell am i gonna get out of this one. ive tried to ally with the spainish but they refuse me. any ideas?

We need more info. Put your strongest troops on the border with Spain. Lots of missles, some good spears, and good swords. Also, at least a few cavs to chase. If they attack, play defensively until the missles are gone. Then rout them, and chase them with the cavs. If they don't attack, no problem. Concentrate on building up your economy.

I'm in kind of a similar situation. Its almost 1420, and due to some large prolonged wars, I have barely expanded that much. The Hungarians are all over the place, with tons more ships than me. Last time it was the Danes, and they have more ships. That killed my economy making it impossible to expand for many years. Now I can't build ships fast enough to rival the Hungarians, and I'm pumping out troops like theres no tomorrow, since I have about 30 years to conquer 2/3 of the map. I have taken almost all of Russia from the Horde, and my plan is to envelope the Hungarians, attacking from all sides. Hopefully I'll have some ships by then. But it will kill my economy since it will be me vs them at that time, theres maybe 4 factions left. I have this feeling the Pope will come back at a crucial time, attack 1 of my provinces, and excommunicate me sending my teetering economy into civil war. I assume you are playing English correct? If so, then follow an old piece of advice, "Use the Longbow Luke, use the Longbow..."

Spanish are a mostly slow infantry force, with a few really potent light javelin units that are quite agile. But regardless, the Longbow, in force, will slaughter all that approach, even if you don't have much height advantage. with a range of 120 meters vs the average 80-100 of other projectile weapons, the LB will do the job.

Spanish will be hard nonetheless. The Pyrenees are a tough obstacle to attack over. If you can, try to build up a MASSIVE army (5,000-6,000 peasants should be adequate, in addition to your regular soldats, which should number about 2,000-4,000 thousand.) to scare the Spanish south, into the lower hills and plains, where you can better get the high ground, rather than having to dig the Spanish out of it. Once you get south, start cutting them up, make em squeal, and show the Spanish the meaning of the words "English will kick your little ass to Portugal, where the Portuguese will make you right at home, 6 feet under." On one occasion, The Almohads, who were unhappy with being driven off the Iberian peninsula years earlier, came and attacked the Spanish I was driving south, resulting in one glorious slaughter fest, with the Spanish starring in the leading role. In the end, I let the Spanish have Portugal, got a nice princess, and a good distraction for the Almohads, who would otherwise have spent their time trying to conquer my territories in Spain.

The Byzantines however, will be hell to beat. Have you considered trying to enlist them as an ally? The Spanish are your real concern for now, and the Byzantines will delay their attacks on you by a few years if you got an alliance, not to mention they haven't completely wiped out the HRE yet, and those Krauts can be tough bastards to beat when cornered. If you are clever, you should send spies en masse to Byzantine territories recently acquired from Germany, starting some rebellions, forcing the byz to leave garrisons and just slowing em down all around, for they lose income, men, and time.

If you can, try to enlist some Arabs to your cause, exspecially the Almohads, if they are still around, for they are fairly easy to provoke into war with Spain.

It depends on what provinces you have. I posted a thread awhile ago talking about how incredibly usefull it is to have Navarre. You can defend any invasion from Spain forever if 1. You hold Navare
2. The Argonese are still there and are peaceful with both sides fighting.
and
3.) YOu have at least a presence in the seas to keep the invader from scooting around you.

Kinda specific but with it's steep slopes, and taking into consideration the previous post about long bows (aiming almost exclusively at the Generals unit) You can hold this situation for YEARS...just ask the Almohads in my game http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/gc-2thumbsup.gif
